“You sure? I can carry you.”

“I’ve told you before I don’t need all this attention. I’m not that hurt.”

“I should warn you that I stocked your apartment with food and tidied up.”

She opened her mouth to speak. When he slid an arm around her, she snapped it shut. He led her to the front of the building at a slow pace. They reached the door, and she realized the lock required a passcode to enter.

“Wait a minute. How did you evengetinto my apartment?”

He flashed a smile. “I have my ways.”

Her stare lingered on his mouth for a beat longer than normal. Not to brag about his skill and charm, but she was definitely letting down her guard. For the past day in the hospital, he hadn’t left her side except to visit the gift shop for a few magazines and a bouquet of get-well flowers.

Wait until she saw how he spruced up her bland, beige apartment.

After he guided her to the elevator, she picked up the conversation where they left off. “What are thesewaysyou have of getting the entry code to my building?”

The elevator doors shut. He eyed her.

They were alone.

She plastered herself against the wall. “Oh no. Don’t look at me like that.”

“Like what?”

“Like you’re thinking of that time we came home from the charity dinner and…” Her throat worked on a hard swallow. “You know what happened.”

“I do. All too well. You had on a scarlet dress I couldn’t wait to peel it off you.”

Her breathing hitched.

“If I recall, I ripped your thong to get to your sweet pussy.”

A strangled cry escaped her. “AJ!”

“Just stating the facts, cupcake” The elevator stopped and the doors opened. He reached for her arm to lead her.

“I got it.” She twisted from his grip but grimaced at the action. He was very good at observing people, and it only took one move for him to see that any side-to-side motion caused her pain.

He let her have her independence but trailed inches behind her, his hand hovering at her elbow, ready to catch her if she lost her balance or tripped.

At her door, she cast him a glare. “I expect an answer to my question about how you gained entry to my apartment.”

He grunted.

As soon as she opened the door, she let out a gasp. She wobbled, and he steadied her with an arm around her back.

“AJ, what did youdo?” She took a step inside and gaped at the hundred or so balloons that filled her apartment.

“I had some time to kill.”

“Wait—you blew these all up yourself?”

“Yeah, with one of those helium tanks you can buy at the party store.”

“This must have taken you ages.” She shook her head at the array of rainbow colors floating all around her apartment.

“I find it difficult to sleep these days.”
