“She’s right,” came the voice over the speaker. “You could do this for a living, Apollo.”

He grunted but said nothing more as he immersed himself in more editing. There was a lot of work to do before he sent it off to the news stations.

At least AJ was distracted from the fact that Blackout hadn’t returned a call about his first plan to hunt down the cell and finish them. Orders like that took a lot of time to be processed. From the time a commander decided to take action to the point where Blackout got orders to go, it could be hours or days. But since there was no suggestion of an imminent threat, days could pass without word or action.

She tore her gaze away from the monitor and fixed it on AJ’s profile. He’d been hunched over the table for hours, refusing food and drink.

How odd that their roles had flipped. A few days ago, AJ was cleaning and bandaging her wound and making sure she had enough healthy food to heal.

She was a much more compliant patient, that was for sure. She got the feeling he could sit here well into the night and she’d have no choice but to eventually order a pizza and stuff it down his throat.

Her side was starting to ache from being on her feet so long. Dragging a chair up next to him wouldn’t be more comfortable either. She hated feeling weak but could use a break.

Touching the back of his hand, she caught his attention and he brought his head up. What he saw on her face had him leaning away from the laptop and looking at her hard. “You need to lie down.”

“At least sit someplace comfortable. I’m going to the sofa for a while.”

He enclosed her fingers in his warm palm and squeezed them. “I’ve got more work here.”

“I know. I only need a few minutes off my feet.”

His features contorted in worry. “I’m sorry I didn’t think to make you sit down before. I got caught up.”

She settled her free hand on his jaw. “It’s all right. You don’t need to take care of me every minute of the day. You’ve got something more important on your mind.”

“Nothing’s as important as you.”

A voice cleared over the speaker. “I’m still here. Listening.”

She giggled and drew away from AJ, thankful things hadn’t heated up between them. She imagined straddling him and sinking over his cock, all the spicy kisses that could have swept them both away.

She pointed to the living room, and he nodded. The sound of his fingers tapping on keys followed her out of the kitchen.

When she lowered herself to the sofa, she let out a sigh of relief. A week at home recovering had done a lot for her stamina and pain. But she still wasn’t totally up to speed not as she’d hoped. Going back to the office on light duty was a great alternative and one that would keep her mind occupied.

She leaned back and closed her eyes, savoring some of the tension easing from her spine. Funny how when one part of a person’s body hurt, the rest compensated until every muscle felt strained.

When her phone buzzed, she slipped the device out of her back pocket.

To her surprise, she saw a text from Gia. But seeing the name dug out a hollow in her stomach too. What if she had bad news to share?

Heart pounding harder, she read the message.

How are things going with you? Healing well?

Whew. Not a dire issue. No danger coming for her and AJ.

Not fast enough for me, but I’m doing fine. How is your world?

She chose that wording to include all of Blackout. Gia probably didn’t know a whole lot more than AJ did. The loved ones of those on the team were kept in the dark too.

I have exciting news to share. Sparrow and I are having a baby!

Gia sent a stream of hearts and baby bottle emojis that brought a bubble of laughter to Indika’s lips.

Her thumbs flew over the screen.I’m soooo happy for you guys!

The sun and blessings did shine on Blackout. They might have given up their lives to go deep ops, but they’d found ways to bring love and light into their lives. Gia was that break in the clouds of nonstop duty for Sparrow. And now a bundle of joy was on the way.
