“I fell in love in three days,” Jesse pointed out.

“But you’re a loose cannon.”

“Don’t you mean a loose screw?” Torin asked.

“Or a loaded cannon?” Jesse asked. “Loose cannon doesn’t sound right. I feel like a loaded cannon most of the time, especially on the ice.”

Sullivan sighed. “That’s not the point. I’m not in love with Eddie.” He wasn’t. He was attracted to her. He found her fascinating and sweet.

He wanted to give her an orgasm.

But that wasn’t love.

That was lust with a side of friendship.

Which wasn’t a bad combination and could be the start of something really amazing if she lived in Beaver Bend.

And, you know, didn’t have a fucking boyfriend.

Chapter9

Monday debuted with a hard-on and a headache.

He could take something for the pounding in his skull.

There was nothing he could do about his dick because the one woman he wanted to have sex with was off-limits.

Sullivan had spent the entire night dreaming that Eddie was being kidnapped by men wearing leather masks. It had been disturbing as hell and the reason he’d overslept. Finn was at his sister’s and when he finally pried his eyes open, he had a text from her expressing concern that he was late.

He groaned and rubbed his eyes. He wasn’t used to sleeping in the guest room at Eddie’s. The room was small and the air conditioning window unit should have been adequate, but it still felt stifling in the room. He felt sweaty and agitated.

It was well after nine, two hours past his usual rising time. He never even set his alarm because he was trained to be up at seven. He texted Sloane back letting her know he would be there by ten, and forced himself to sit up.

Sloane texted him back, blasting him for being late and leaving his new puppy with her.

She probably thought he’d drank too much the night before since it was normally his night off. Or hooked up with someone. Or both.

He wasn’t going to be hooking up with anyone anytime in the near future. Maybe ever again.

He’d spent the whole night stewing over both Jesse and Torin’s words to him, and about his own strong reaction to the images of Eddie. He was insanely attracted to her. If he couldn’t have her, which he could not, then he didn’t want to be with any other woman right now or anytime soon.

Groaning and lamenting his luck that he hadn’t even drank any alcohol and he still had a pounding headache, he forced himself out of bed. Pulling on shorts but not bothering with a shirt, he yanked open the bedroom door and stumbled into the living room.

He almost fell over Eddie.

“Shit, sorry.”

She was sitting on the living room floor.

He recovered and veered toward the kitchen. “Good morning.”

“Good morning,” she said, and her tone had him immediately swiveling around. Her voice trembled.

“What’s wrong?” he asked.

“Nothing. I’m just overwhelmed with work.”

There were papers strewn around her and she was still in her pajamas. Her hair was piled on her head in a messy bun, and there were dark circles under her eyes, like she wasn’t sleeping. Her laptop and phone were both in front of her.
