“Don’t worry; you can fuck me properly when we get home.” I feel his smile as I slip my tongue between his lips, kissing him gently.

“Take me home,” I tell him.

CHAPTER NINETEEN

Cruel Pill to Swallow

“THESE ARE YOUR new digs?” I look around the small but trendy space in West Hollywood. The neon sign, sleek modern desk, and artwork hanging on the wall scream Adam. He looks handsome in black jeans and a buttoned shirt. Of course, it wouldn’t be Adam if he didn’t dress it up with metallic blue boots, with the tips of his hair dyed to match.

“You should see the studio!” he practically squeals with excitement, as he takes Cash and me down the hallway and into the recording studio.

Once inside, Adam and Cash fawn over the new soundboard, but all I can think of is how much Wade would have liked being here. It feels weird enjoying Adam’s success when he and Wade are not together. It’s like picking sides in a divorce but sneaking around with the ex. I know Wade would never ask us not to be friends with Adam, but I know it hurts him that we are here and he is not.

As if he can sense that I am cheating on him, I get a text from Wade. He sends me a picture of the break room at his work, pointing out the coffee ring someone left on the counter with the caption ‘animals’, which makes me chuckle.

“What do you think?” Adam’s voice brings my attention back to him.

“I really like it,” I reply with a smile, looking around at the studio. It’s such a modern and fun space. “I’m jealous.” I cross my arms over my chest. I might have to talk with Bret to update the space. A neon sign might be a bit over the top, but a couch that doesn’t have a questionable stain on it would be a fabulous upgrade.

Cash passes by and gives me a kiss on the cheek while he exits the studio, waving his phone at me to indicate he needs to take a call outside.

“Was that Wade?” Adam points at my phone and I tuck it back into my purse guiltily.

“No,” I lie and scrunch up my nose.

“Liar.” Adam spins around on his heel and takes a seat at the soundboard. “How is he?” Sadness clouds his blue eyes.

“He’s good, bitching about coffee rings in the break room,” I laugh.

Adam chuckles and shakes his head.

“Have you been seeing anyone?” I ask cautiously.

Adam looks anywhere but at me. “No one significant.” I know exactly what he means.

“You man whore,” I tease.

“Hey, a man has needs,” Adam scoffs and rolls his eyes.

“Don’t…”

“I wouldn’t say anything to Wade, I hope you know that. I don’t want to hurt him,” I interrupt. I know talking about Adam isn’t Wade’s favorite subject either.

Adam nods, satisfied.

“I’m so happy for you.” I motion to all of the decor and equipment in the room. “This is really something.”

“I think I found something I’m really good at,” he smiles, proud of himself.

“You were a great front man,” I tell him.

“Better than Keelin,” he says in a bratty tone.

The mention of Keelin’s name reminds me of the standoff in the club all those months ago which makes me chuckle to myself.

“You’re thinking about it, aren’t you?” Adam accuses.

“Get out of my head!” I scold him. A smile spreads over my face as I think about it some more. “It was like the battle of the lead singers.”
