I laugh, causing my own stomach to ache. It’s been way too long since I’ve had a night like this. We don’t find the time often enough to hang out, and I don’t want to go home to an empty house.

“Do you want to go over to theTap Room?” I ask Georgie, leaning forward. “I was told they have a good band on the weekends.” I smile, raising my eyebrows.

She looks down at her scrubs and frowns.

“Forget it, it’s okay. I was just thinking since we’re close by,” I say, throwing my napkin over my plate.

The waitress makes her way back to our table, and before she has a chance to speak, I say, “Just the check.”

“You don’t want your dessert?” she asks.

I pat my stomach. “I don’t think I could eat it.”

“Really?” Georgie protests.

“Do you have a hollow leg I don’t know about?” I joke.

“I’ll box it up for you,” the waitress says, and clears our plates.

As soon as she leaves, Georgie says, “You should go.”

“Go where?” I ask, confused.

“To theTap Room.”

“It’s fine, we can go another weekend.” I wave her suggestion away.

“You say that, but then we’ll never go,” Georgie says, and it’s true. “Plus, you’ll be busy with your sister’s wedding, and the next time either of us is free will be pushing next month.”

“You’re still coming, right?” I ask, expectantly.

“Miss the wedding of the century? Never,” she quips.

I look out the window to the crowded street and watch as people walk by. This is my life, putting things off another day, another week, another month, until they’re completely forgotten. The fact that I happened to be free for dinner tonight was a miracle, and Noelle is spending the night at Sofia’s.

As if she can see right through me, Georgie says, “Ah hell, who cares if I’m in my scrubs? Let’s go.”

“Really? You don’t have to,” I say. “Now I feel like I've guilted you into it.”

“You didn’t guilt me,” she says sternly. “It’ll be fun.”

As soon as the check arrives, Georgie grabs it.

“I got it,” she says, snatching it before I have a chance to.

“Stop, you don’t have to do that. Let me give you half.” I reach in my purse to grab my wallet.

“It’s your birthday, let me pay.” She places money in the checkbook and closes it.

Once we step outside, I stop and close my eyes, inhaling deeply. It smells like rain. I look up at the clouds in the dark sky and feel the wind pick up.

“You’re doing that weird thing again,” Georgie says, checking to make sure she has everything.

I level my eyes to Georgie’s. “It’s going to rain,” I tell her.

“Thank fuck.” She pulls her large bag further up her shoulder after pulling her phone out to check it. “Shit!” she says.

“Hang on.” She motions for me to wait while she turns for some privacy.
