“Do you question your mother like this?” I hear Georgie ask.

“My mother doesn’t ask stupid questions.” Noelle places her hand on her hips, and I can’t help but laugh at the look on Georgie’s face.

“Do you hear this?” Georgie gestures to me.

“I heard.” Groaning, I close the door behind me.

All of the garbage has been picked up, but there are still items on the bed that have yet to be packed.

“My luggage is all ready and waiting by the door. Meanwhile, you two are still messing around,” I say, while heading into the bathroom to make sure I grabbed everything.

“What are you trying to say?” Noelle asks from behind me.

“To move your ass or Georgie can drive you home,” I threaten.

When I re-enter the room, Georgie has a satisfied expression on her face as she looks at Noelle.

“God, no,” Noelle pleads, grabbing the last of her clothes and stuffing them in her bag without folding them, half of which she didn’t even wear. The rest of my Sunday will be spent doing laundry.

“What’s wrong with me driving you home?” Georgie says, offended.

“You listen to talk radio,” Noelle says, zipping up her bag.

“I like to know what’s happening in the world,” Georgie says, zipping up her own bag and pulling out the handle.

Holding the door until both of them are out, I let it slam shut while I follow them to the lobby.

“I just need to check out,” I say to them as I stop by the front lobby. “Wait here until they bring the car around,” I tell Noelle, pointing to the plush oversized chairs in the lobby. Georgie follows me to the front desk and says, “Your kid…” she pauses while I glare at her, waiting for what’s going to come out of her mouth next, “Is magnificent.” I laugh while placing the key card on the counter.

“How was everything?” the clerk asks.

“Wonderful, thanks,” I say, digging in my purse for my wallet.

“The room has already been taken care of by the Kennedy/Corvin party,” the clerk says, smiling.

Iwasgoing to pay for the mini bar, but thinking back on what an ass Beth was to me, I place my wallet back in my purse and smile at Georgie who raises a questioning eyebrow.

“I’m telling you, Lake, your kid is going to be a force to be reckoned with. I feel sorry for whoever falls for her because she is going to break a lot of hearts,” Georgie says, while I look over my shoulder at Noelle who’s draping her legs over the arm of the chair. Everything Georgie says is true, and that’s what scares me the most about letting her go. Here I can keep a watchful eye on her, but out there, in the real world, my scope is a bit smaller.

“That’s what worries me,” I say, turning towards Georgie and cocking my head to the side.

“And you,” Georgie points an accusatory finger at me, “need to spill the tea.”

Laughing, I say, “I think you’ve been hanging around Noelle too much this weekend.”

When we exit the hotel’s double doors to the portico, I hand the valet my ticket.

“It’s too fucking hot out,” Georgie says, fanning herself with one of the hotel brochures.

Without any preamble, I blurt, “I had sex in the hotel bathroom last night.”

Georgie’s mouth drops open. “With the dirty-mouthed, hot musician?” she asks.

“No, the bartender,” I say, sneering at Georgie. “Of course, the dirty-mouthed, hot musician. Who do you think I am?” As soon as it comes out of my mouth I roll my eyes, because after having a one-night stand with a stranger, and then having sex with him in the hotel bathroom at my sister's wedding, it’s a reasonable assumption that I have finally lost my mind.

Georgie narrows her eyes at me.

“But it’s not happening again.” I shake my head. “I wasn’t thinking straight. It was like this spontaneous thing and I don’t really understand why I did it, but oh God, Georgie,” I grab onto her arms, “It was good.” The words spill from my mouth a mile a minute. “Likereallyfucking good.”
