“Yes,” he scoffs.

“Because if my sister opens fish slippers…” I warn, but I’m cut off.

“For the last time, it was a gag gift for Patricia’s retirement party!” he says, rather loudly, and I have to suppress a smile.

“Thank you, Miles.” I take it from him, giving it a little shake.

“I still can’t believe your sister would have a bridal shower on your birthday,” Miles scoffs, shaking his head.

“Yeah, well, that’s my sister,” I tell him, but honestly, I couldn’t care less about my birthday.

“And who has a wedding in August?” Miles asks. “In Arizona?” he adds, as if I don’t already know how excruciatingly hot it is.

My phone vibrates with another text, and this time it’s from my friend Georgie.

G: Meet for dinner in Tempe after work?

Normally I would decline, opting for a quiet night at home and a glass of wine, but after the day I’ve had and the fact that I have to spend part of the afternoon trying on gowns with my sister, dinner with Georgie sounds great, especially since my kid ditched me.

L: Will there be drinks involved?

I can almost see her eyes roll.

G: Is this a serious question? Have you finally lost your marbles?

L: Diablo’s?

I suggest a great Italian place close to the college that I haven’t been to in ages.

G: Deal, and do not cancel on me!

“You’re late,”Beth snipes, turning around in her wedding dress from her spot on the podium.

Momentarily I stop, admiring how stunning she would look if she didn’t have such a sour face. Beth is three years younger than me, and although we look alike, that’s where the similarities end.

“I had to go home and change first,” I explain, setting my purse down on the nearest chair.

“Into anAerosmitht-shirt?” she says, looking at my choice of attire disdainfully.

“Only the best for you, Beth,” I say sarcastically, plastering a smile on my face as one of the associates makes her way over to us.

“You must be Lake, Beth’s sister,” she says, extending her hand for me to shake, with her beaming white teeth, severe blonde ponytail, and tight pencil skirt.

“The one and only,” I reply, shaking her hand.

“I can see the family resemblance,” she says, nodding her head as she looks from Beth to me.

“Thanks, considering she’s adopted,” I tease, squinting my eyes at Beth.

“Wasn’t funny when I was a little kid, still isn’t,” Beth says, annoyed.

The woman looks at us, confused. “I’ll get the dress ready for you to try on in the dressing room. I’m Sabrina, if you need anything,” she says, ignoring our sniping. “Would you like a glass of Cham…”

“Yes,” I interrupt, not giving her a chance to finish.

“pagne, while you wait?” she finishes anyway and I give her a pointed look.
