“You feel guilty and that’s understandable, but Beth doesn’t even know how you feel about Adrian. You never gave her a chance,” Georgie pleads. “Does she even know half the stuff you’ve told me about Steven?” Georgie adds.
“It’s a little late for that. Besides, it doesn’t matter.”
“If she knew, maybe she’d have wanted to protect you, too.” Georgie looks at me with wide eyes. “I think she’d have a better understanding about where you’re coming from.”
Slumping back in my chair, I know Georgie is right. I should have told Beth the truth about Adrian the minute I continued to see him after the wedding. I had plenty of time to do that.
“I just,” looking down at my lap, I search for the words. “Never thought…”
“That you would fall in love with him?” Georgie finishes for me, one eyebrow cocked.
“Don’t be absurd, Georgie.” I cross my arms over my chest and look away.
“Don’t bullshit a bullshitter,” Georgie says, and I flick my eyes back to her, narrowing them. She’s petite, but her attitude makes up for it.
“I don’t need all this drama.” I wave my hand in the air like I can erase it from my life.
“Think of all the orgasm’s you’ll miss,” she counters.
“I have a lot going on at work. I haven’t even told you the worst of it.”
“Do not underestimate how scary you can be” She points at me. “You’ll kick ass like you always do, and besides, all that bullshit with the Waterman merger is temporary.”
“He’s younger than me,” I say but don’t get to finish my sentence when Georgie silences me.
“I fail to see the problem here. Next!” she says, loudly.
“I’m in a different place in life than him, Georgie,” I say sternly. “God,” I hesitate to even say it out loud because it sounds absurd in my head. “I’m past the point of wanting to have another baby,” I say sadly, because I wanted Noelle to have a sibling. I wanted to have a baby with someone who would love them with every fiber of their being like I did. Someone like Adrian, and it made me realize this the minute I saw him with his nieces and Layla because I know in my heart he would be a good dad. “I don’t want to take that away from someone.”
“Have you even talked to him about this?”
“No, Georgie.” I look at her crossly. “I neglected to ask him if he wants a baby in between dirty texts and multiple orgasms.”
“Multiple?” Georgie raises an eyebrow.
I roll my eyes at her.
“Then there’s Noelle,” I continue before she derails the conversation further.“I don’t stop being a mother when she turns eighteen. I’ve been preoccupied lately, and I wasn’t there for her when she needed me.” I stop, choosing my words carefully, thinking about that night in front of the refrigerator eating ice cream. “She’s not a little girl anymore,” I grit my teeth.
“Oh yeah, because she had sex.” Georgie pushes a piece of French toast through the syrup on her plate casually.
“How doyouknow?” I ask, astonished.
“She texted me.” Georgie places her elbows on the table. “I told her it’s probably good he had a small dick, because you know, first time and all, but yeesh,” she rears back, smiling tightly. “Don’t want to keep that around forever.” Georgie shakes her head and refocuses her attention on her plate.
“Tell me you didn’t actually say that to her?” I stare her down, disbelievingly.
Georgie looks up from her plate, mouth full, and syrup dripping down her chin. “What? That’s how kids talk these days; they’re unnaturally honest and open. It’s weird.” She shakes her head and wipes the syrup from her chin.
Slapping my forehead, I groan loudly. “This is another reason I need to be around more.” Looking pointedly at her, I explain, “So I can monitor who she’s talking to.”
“Oh stop. You want your daughter to be stuck with her high school boyfriend,unsatisfied, thinking what he’s packing is normal?” She looks at me as if I’m the one who’s being unreasonable.
“Why would she text you about that anyway?” I cringe.
“Because I’m the cool aunt.” Georgie smiles proudly.
Motioning to the waitress to get our check, Georgie pushes the empty plate away from her.
