She gawks at me like I told her that her gerbil just died. “WHAT?” she shrieks. “How could you say that? I was with him forthree years. You’re telling me we’re not meant to be?”

Oh, shoot. “No,” I quickly say. “Of course I didn’t mean that. I only meant that maybe you guys aren’t compatiblerightnow. But that may change in the future—”

“You know what you can do with your ridiculous app? Shove it.” She whisks away before I can say anything.

Honestly, I didn’t expect everyone to find their perfect match, at least not in the beginning. What are the odds that people actually date the right person? Sometimes, it takes years for a person to find the right one. And like I told Paisley yesterday, my app isn’t a soulmate finding app.

I shake my head and tell myself to take a deep breath. There will always be negative results along with positive ones. I just need to shake this off and move on.

I don’t make it far before another girl stands before me. She glares at me so fiercely, I wonder if maybehersuperpower is optic blasts and she plans to unleash them on me.

“Can I help you?” I ask.

“My boyfriend cheated on me because of you!” she shouts.

My eyes widen. “What?”

“Because your good-for-nothing app matched him with someone else. He cheated on me.”

I hold up my hands, trying to calm her down. “I’m sorry he betrayed you like that, but that’s not the app’s fault. The app didn’t tell him to get together with someone else when he was still with you.”

Her mouth falls open. “Are you serious? You’re not going to take any responsibility for what he did? Your app didn’t match him withme. It matched him withher. None of this would have happened if you hadn’t forced us to use your app. You want feedback to share with the judges at that silly competition? Okay, here’s my feedback.” She takes her phone and starts tapping, “This app sucks! It doesn’t find you your perfect match. It breaks up the one you’re currently in. It makes people question their loyalties.” She lifts her head to me and narrows her eyes again. “I wish I could give it zero stars.”

“I get that you’re hurt,” I say. “But this is a good thing. Now you know what a cheating jerk he is and you can move on and find someone else. The app did you a favor. And now you can use it to find your perfect match because clearly you were with the wrong person.”

She stares at me incredulously. “How conceited are you? My gosh. This is the last time I listen to a nerd.” She storms off.

I stare after her. I’m not conceited. Obviously I’m not happy that her ex hurt her, but doesn’t she see this is for the best? I hope she feels better soon and gives my app a second chance. I’m sure it’ll find the right person for her.

I barely take a step before a guy blocks my path. Oh no. Not another one.

“Is there a problem?” I ask, internally bracing myself for his response.

“Yeah there’s a problem!” he barks. “Your app told me that my perfect match is my best friend. So she and I decided to get together. You know what happened?”

Please be good. Please be good.

“It was horrible!” he continues. “Thanks to you, not only are we not dating, but we’re not best friends anymore, either. I’m uninstalling it right now.” He glares at me before tapping on his phone. Then he walks away, knocking his shoulder into mine and nearly throwing me to the floor.

“Sheesh, ow,” I grumble as I rub my shoulder. “What the heck is going on all of a sudden?” I mutter to myself as I make my way to my locker.

This time, three girls block my way, each of them folding their arms over their chests.

Please don’t tell me…

“My boyfriend thinks I’m cheating on him.”

I try not to sigh. “And this is my fault because…?”

“It’s because of your app! I got matched up with another guy, but I don’t care what your stupid app says. I love my boyfriend and want to be with him forever. But he thinks I’m lying and am seeing this guy behind his back. What kind of garbage did you create?”

“Are you trying to break everyone up?” her friend demands. “Is that the goal of your ‘dating app?’”

“What? Of course not! My app is supposed to help people—”

“I got matched with a guy who hates me,” another girl says. When I turn around, I find that a small crowd has gathered around me. “I thought I should make up with him and maybe, you know, try something with him. But he laughed in my face. What nonsense are you running here?”

“My girl has been in tears for two days!” another guy yells. “She and I haven’t matched and she thinks we’re not meant to be. I’m so worried one of us would get a notification with a match and we’ll break up.”
