“Be careful,” I tell her.

“Did you see her?” She drops to her knees before the couch and looks under it. “Where is Lady Bunny?”

Lady Bunny is a three-inch plushie my parents bought for my sister when she booked her first show. Apparently, it’s brought her luck many times. I don’t really believe in superstition, but I have to admit that there were times Mia landed roles I never in a million years thought she’d book. Powers of the pinkish/orangish bunny? Who knows.

Mom rushes out of the kitchen and is about to run up the stairs, but then she catches sight of Mia under the couch. “Did you leave her at the L.A. house?”

Mia jumps up from the floor with panicked eyes. “I don’t know! I don’t think so. Mom, I won’t get a callback without her.”

“Okay, okay, relax. When did you last have her?”

“I can’t remember. I’ve been punished for so long, it feels like ages since my last audition.”

“It’s only been a few weeks,” I tell her. “Did you check the laundry? Maybe she got mixed in with the wash.”

Mia gasps, her hand flying to her chest. “You think she got washed? Everyone knows you’re not supposed to wash your good luck charm. It gets rid of all its magical powers.”

Mom sighs. “I’m sorry, Mia, but it’s getting late. We’ll have no choice but to leave without her. Maybe you’ll be lucky and we’ll find her at the L.A. house.”

Mia slams her face into the couch. “My life is over.”

“So dramatic,” I tease.

“Crisis averted?” Dad barges into the house. “Please tell me Lady Bunny has been recovered.”

“Unfortunately, no,” Mom says.

“But how could she go on an audition without her good luck charm?”

“You’re not helping, Dad,” I say.

“Hey, that rabbit has magical powers, I tell you. I once had an audition and didn’t realize she was in my pocket. I knew it was a long shot that I’d get the role because they really wanted another actor. And voila! Bagged it.”

“I need her!” Mia is close to tears.

“Mia, you know it’s not the bunny that gets you a callback,” I say. “It’s you. Your talent.” I suddenly sit up. “Oh my gosh. I know where she is.”

“What?” She chases after me as I hurry up the stairs and bolt into my room. I head to closet three and open the door. There she is, sitting right there on one of my shoe boxes.

Mia shrieks before grabbing her. “What was she doing there?”

“You hid her from WillowBot, remember? When you stole her to clean your room. You were worried she’d damage her.”

“I didn’t steal her to clean my room. She was just keeping me company.”

“Uh huh.”

“Is the crises averted now?” Dad calls from downstairs.

“Yeah!” we both call back.

“Thank the blessed stars!” Mom says. “Now can we finish packing before we miss our flight? Mia!” she calls. “Don’t forget to pack underwear.”

“I have enough at the other house.”

“And an outfit for the audition?”

“I already packed it.”
