Mr. Tusk is forty-one years old.

A grown-ass man.

And he doesn’t need me to “baby” him.

But on the other hand, my boss is also from an entirely different species, technically an “alien.” And he’s a visitor to this planet and I’m afraid he’s being scammed by ruthless humans. I’m here tonight at this secret auction house in the middle of nowhere because he needs my help.

And…I might’ve accidentally read through Mr. Tusk’s private communications and learned that he thinks he can only get a girlfriend by paying for companionship, at an auction.

Yep.

I didn’t mean to read his private messages. He’d sent me an entirely new glass tablet and told me to train on it and I was more than happy because how many people on Earth besides diplomats, heads of state and military were allowed access to Voltare tech? I excitedly went in and learned this new system. But at one point I was alerted to a new message from Mr. Tusk, so I opened it. I think he didn’t realize he’d given me access to his private messages too within his Voltare messaging system.

I was shocked to discover my boss trying to purchase a human girlfriend.

Okay, I shouldn’t have continued reading once I knew it was private and not business, but I couldn’t stop. People were lying to him, telling him that humans only find mates at expensive secret auctions. And he’d been invited to attend an auction where he could purchase a virginal girlfriend for one million dollars. And he was going.

Ridiculous.

I immediately went into detective mode and dug into the dark net to get to the bottom of who, what, when, where, why and how. In a matter of hours, I knew the extent of the nefarious nature of this transaction. Mr. Tusk was being led down the wrong path and I had to help him. Me. I couldn’t tell the police. I had to protect Derwen Tusk from ending up on the news cycle.

And now I’m here, tonight, in the lineup at this virgin auction, ready to protect Mr. Tusk from bad men intent on theft. There was never going to be an actual virgin for Mr. Tusk to take with him to his spaceship—only a scam and possible physical harm.

Somehow, I’ve got to get him to bid on me because criminals are trying to take advantage of my boss and I’m going to put a stop to it. And that’s the only reason why I’d show up in the lineup at a mysterious auction house, hardly dressed in fancy lingerie and about to strut my stuff on stage. Right?

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Young, gorgeous women group around, chatting and laughing. They are all auctioning off their virginity tonight to the highest bidder for a cool one million dollars. One mil, for reals, after taxes. At least this part of the auction is real. They really do hire verified virgins who sign contracts, perfectly aware that they are going to have sex with a stranger tonight and possibly get married. This is an actual auction that’s been going on for years, in a variety of locations all over the world. And the reasons these young women have for needing the money sound genuine—to help their family, or to start a business or pay off student loans. These goals sound lovely.

I’m the weirdo not actually here for the life-changing payout, but if some of that money did happen to accidentally fall into my bank account, you know byaccident, I wouldn’t be in the least upset.

I can’t believe I was accepted into tonight’s auction on such short notice. I mean, yeah, I’m a twenty-five-year-old virgin so I fit the parameters, but I’m not exactly a famed beauty.

More like an isolated book worm, with unruly hair and thick glasses.

I nervously wait backstage for the bidding to start.

“I love your hair,” Taylor Brown, the tall, incredibly beautiful girl next to me offers. She’s a sweetheart and we’ve become instant friends. “It’s such a pretty color. Is that natural?”

I twirl a strand of my strawberry blonde hair in my fingers because I’m concerned that “imposter alert” sirens are about to go off at any moment. Security will drag me away and toss me out into the dark night. “Yes, it’s natural,” I offer, trying my best to keep my voice light and steady. “And thanks for saying that. Red hair runs in my family. It’s naturally curly so I keep it long and one length, because it’s easiest that way. Normally I have it up in a messy bun, but today I went through the bother of a shiny blow out.”

Taylor smiles, exposing brilliant white teeth, and tosses her own sleek blonde hair with rich caramel highlights over her shoulders. “You are so lucky to have such gorgeous color. I have to spend a fortune getting mine to look half-decent.” She sounds genuine, like she reallydoeswish her hair would look good with little effort. “And your green eyes, they’re so striking.”

My cheeks start to heat because I’m not used to such attention. “Oh, thanks. That’s nice of you to say.”

And then I make sure to compliment her too, which is easy because of her glowing bronze skin, dangerous curves and flashing hazel eyes. All the other girls in tonight’s lineup are fantastically beautiful. I feel nervous standing next to these stunning creatures in daring lingerie and continue to wonder when I’ll be escorted outside and banned from this auction. Don’t they see the freckles on my cheeks, arms and legs? The mole on the side of my neck?

Champagne bottles pop nearby and the party starts backstage. A loud beat makes the event lively and I take a glass and start sipping too, hoping it will calm my nerves. Tinkling laughter floats across the group and the chatting grows louder.

“I can’t believe I’m about to go out there,” Taylor laughs. “I’ve never done anything like this in my entire life.”

“I can’t believe I’m doing this either,” I agree.

“Can I tell you a secret?” she whispers.
