Logan doesn’t seem to have the issues I’m having, which is so typically Logan. Once he commits to something, he just goes for it without thinking too hard about it. He just smirks at me, tips my chin up, and kisses me chastely on the lips. He tastes like toothpaste, which I’m thankful for because I don’t do morning breath.

“Good morning,” I whisper, my voice husky.

“Morning. Do you mind if I snag some coffee before I head home?”

I roll my eyes. Maybe he’s not as comfortable as I thought. Logan never asks before he takes food at my place. “Since when do you ask?”

Logan just grins. He’s pouring himself a mug, but his eyes are on my open cabinet, and I know he sees something he wants to munch on as well. “I was just trying to be polite.”

“Well, don’t. It’s weird. You know you can have anything I have, Lo. And you don’t need to leave. I don’t mind you being here while I work.”

“I got a couple things I need to get done before our date tonight. I just got a call, and I need to go into work for at least a few hours. I need to get all the files for the case over to Homicide.” His voice catches, and the happy-go-lucky act disappears for a moment. “I’ll be back in time for our date.”

I walk closer and, on instinct, wrap my arms around Logan. He sighs into my embrace. “You know I’m not worried about that. Obviously I want you there, but I understand your job comes first. I have a feeling Lake would understand too. It seems like he often has last-minute changes as well.”

Logan just grunts. I know he’s trying to let go of whatever Lake is keeping from us. We barely know the guy. He’s entitled to secrets, and both of us are pretty sure he’s not hiding criminal activities, so we’ll let him tell us in time. But Logan is a detective at heart, so it’s not exactly easy for him to not investigate.

“Well, either way, I planned this date, and I won’t miss it.” Logan pulls a box of Pop-Tarts out of my cabinet. He’s only wearing a pair of briefs that are so old they’re practically see-through.

Why is that so fucking hot?

It’s weird because even though I always thought Logan was hot, nothing felt this sexually charged before. I mean, the guy is just eating a cold Pop-Tart in my kitchen, for gods’ sake, yet I’m popping half a boner from the sight. Ugh, I need to get to work.

“I’m going to head into my office. Just lock the door behind you.”

“Ok,” Logan tells me around his half-chewed pastry. It’s so adorable that on instinct, instead of leaving, I close the space between us, clutch my hands in the hair on the back of his head, and kiss him.

Logan’s taken by surprise and freezes. It only takes a moment for his brain to catch up, and Logan quickly swallows his bite before taking control. I only meant to give a quick peck before going to work, but apparently, that’s not going to happen. Logan’s big hand wraps around the back of my neck as he pulls me closer, not letting me go. Logan’s tongue brushes against my teeth, and I part my lips, allowing him in.

I feel actual sparks run down my body as Logan completely devours me. The only kiss in my life that has ever come close was with Lake the other night. I don’t know what that says about me or us, but when we finally part, I feel like I’m in a daze, and I’m so fucking turned on.

Logan is staring at me, his eyes completely clouded with lust as he pants, trying to catch his breath. His cock is practically bursting out of those little briefs. It would be so easy to take this further. To tell work I’m running late, drag Logan back into my bed, and have our way with each other until we’re both satisfied.

It takes all the strength in me not to do just that. I feel very strongly that this isn’t just going to be Logan and me in this relationship. And if that’s the case, then we owe Lake a conversation before any combination of the three of us goes further than we just did. Hell, that fucking kiss was already more than I anticipated.

Logan seems to understand how hard it is for me to turn around and go to work because that possessive, turned-on look morphs into a smirk. “Don’t you have to go work, babe?”

Oh, that cocky little shit. But he’s right. So I adjust myself so I’m a little less uncomfortable and turn around, finally forcing myself out of my damn kitchen.

Logan is chuckling to himself as I leave. “Have a good day at work!” he calls after me, and ugh, I just want to go back and throw something at the guy. Then I find myself laughing as I finally close the door to my bedroom slash office. Logan is literally the only person that can make me go from a horny teenager who wants to jump him and have my way with him to absolutely driving me nuts. And I wouldn’t want it any other way.

EIGHTEEN

LAKE

Since I already worked in the office today, I told Evander I’d meet him and Logan at his apartment for our date. They offered to come to New Jersey, since I’m the only one who has to keep coming into the city, but there’s no point today.

I’m strangely calm, and I feel like maybe I shouldn’t be. I received texts from River and Cooper in a group chat, then a separate group chat from Avery and Zoe, another text from Essie, and a phone call from Dad. Even River’s friend Cam messaged me, which is really strange, since I don’t think he particularly likes me. I still don’t know the full story as to why he’s living with my brother, but he’s still there and shows no sign of leaving.

All of these well-wishes are confusing me. Maybe this is a bigger deal than I think it is? Or maybe they just aren’t used to me expressing any interest in another person? Either way, the only nerves I have are because I’m probably going to have to cancel.

Assistant Director Wells threw this assignment on my desk ten minutes after four, and it was a mess. Whichever agent had this assignment before me either purposely sabotaged the case or is completely inept at their job. Either way, they were caught as soon as they tried to infiltrate this system. Not only that, the hackers on the other side used our intrusion as a way to get in too. And now, not only does Wells want me to stop these hackers before they break through our walls, but he wants me to somehow salvage this mission and find a way back in.

It’s not completely impossible, of course, but it’s going to be hours and hours of work, and I will completely miss my first date. I’m not sure what to tell them, either. Will they believe that a regular IT guy would have this kind of emergency? Probably not, and I’m a terrible liar. It’s one thing to lie about my job on paper, but to lie to their faces or over the phone? They’ll see right through it.

I don’t want to cancel. It confuses me some, but I’m actually looking forward to this. I consider calling River and asking for advice, but I really need to work this out on my own. So, as soon as I'm in a good place where the systems can run on their own for a while, I tell my assistant to keep an eye on things while I make a personal phone call, and I walk outside the building to get some privacy.

I dial Evander’s number and he answers on the third ring. “Hey, sweetheart. It’s nice to hear from you.”
