“Are you hungry?” I ask, it’s not quite lunchtime, but I’m starving.

“I could eat.”

“I’ll go and grab us some sandwiches.” I look down at the wetsuit. “Although, has Molly changed her rule on sand and water in the shop?” It’s a dumb rule considering she’s on the beach.

“Fine. I’ll go.” Zee makes an exaggerated effort to stand up. “What do you want?”

“Club sandwich with everything. Do you think Molly will throw in some chips?”

“Maybe.” She smiles. I stole half her plate of fries the other night, so hopefully, she understands my love for the fast-food delight. “Don’t go anywhere.”

“Not planning to.”

I enjoy the view as she walks up the beach to Molly’s. Her hips sway just enough and set my mind racing. Zee seems comfortable in her own skin, which is another thing I’m starting to love about her. She’s not covered up to walk to Molly’s, confident in showing off her amazing figure in that olive-green bikini. Although, I’m glad the beach isn’t packed with other guys like me right now.

It will only be a matter of time, though. This place will be busy in a few weeks, and then who’s going to be gawking at Zee? I push the thought away. We still have time.

My eyes stay glued to her until she goes inside, then I lie back and enjoy the heat of the sun. It’s pretty peaceful for a few minutes, and the crash of the waves on the shore chills me out even further.

“Hey!” I squint through my hands at the voice I don’t recognise.

“Hey,” I respond to the two girls standing over me. I sit up and rest my elbows on my knees.

“I don’t think you’re a local, right?” The blonde one asks as she looks me over.

“No. I’m here for the surf.” I stand up and keep half an eye out towards Molly’s.

“That’s cool. I’m not going in today, but I try and get some waves most days.” She nods along, but something tells me she’s not the surfer kind. It might be the bright blue nails, the big hoop earrings or the tiny material thing tied to her hips. Or, it could be her friend’s giggle that she attempts and fails to stifle at that comment.

“The waves have been good. I’m hoping they stay.”

“My name’s Elise. This is Mel.” Elise steps forward, shoving her boobs in my direction.

“Nice to meet you.” I nod but don’t give them my name.

“So, as you’re not from around here, need someone to show you the best spots?” She rocks her shoulders back and forth like she’s just offered me some great prize.

“Thanks, but I’m good. And, I’ve actually got a girlfriend.”

“Well, we won’t tell if you don’t.” She smirks, and it makes her look as unattractive as she sounds. Her friend just smiles along.

“I’m afraid that’s not my style.” Over their shoulder, I can see the only girl I’m interested in walking back with a bag from Molly’s, my cap, looking so much better on her than it does on me. “This is my girlfriend.” I make my smile as big as possible, which isn’t hard when I get a look at Zee. The smile on her face falters when she clocks the other chicks, but I grab her waist and pull her into me.

The two girls look a little stunned and certainly change their welcoming vibe, so I rub it in their faces a little more and lean in to steal a kiss from Zee. A full-on, possessive, you’re my girlfriend, and I don’t want anyone to doubt that kiss.

Her smile’s back in place when I pull away, and she turns to the girls. “Elise. Mel. Nice to see you.”

They don’t respond, just shake their heads and strop off through the sand, kicking half of it up behind them as they go.

Zee and I break out laughing before we drop down to the towel and open the lunch bag.

“One club. Chips. And I got us a couple of Cokes.”

“Perfect.” I unwrap the food, breath in the hot vinegar smell, and dig in. “You know those girls?” I mumble and look up.

She’s busy unwrapping her sandwich. “Yeah. Kinda. They’re in my year. Elise lives along the coast. She’s a bitch.”

“She surf?” I ask while shovelling chips.
