CHAPTER11

ZENNOR

Then

The smile on my face is hard to wipe off, and really, I don’t care.

I’m happy. I feel it through every molecule of my body.

Sleeping with Jayce only seemed to dial-up my feelings for him. If I was worried I’d fallen before, well, there was no denying it now.

I was completely, one hundred percent, in love with him and didn’t care that there was an expiry date to us. That was a problem for tomorrow.

I skip to work, ignoring the clouds bubbling out over the ocean. The weather didn’t matter. Nothing was going to taint my mood or shift my smile today.

“Ohh, somebody’s happy.” Molly looks up as I close the door behind me.

“Yep.” I put my bag behind the counter and grab my apron.

“Any reason?”

“Nope.” The p pops as I lift my head and get set to work.

“Well, I’m not buying that.” She laughs at me as she finishes re-filling the coffee machine with beans. “I’m going to put money on Jayce being the reason for that smile.”

“And if he is?”

“Then I’m happy you’re happy.” The teasing tone is gone now.

I know what she’s going to say, but I have to go there anyway. “I sense a but coming?”

“But he’s leaving in a few days.”

“So?” I challenge, annoyed that my happiness is in jeopardy with her reminder of something that I’m well aware of and doing everything I can to ignore.

“Just saying.” She shrugs her shoulder. “Can you finish setting up?”

I’m grateful for her subject change and get to work but feel the pull of reality souring my mood.

The café is busy and allows me to focus on work rather than Jayce. But his appearance after the lunch rush ruins that.

“Hey. A chocolate milkshake, thanks.” He leans over to kiss me with his order.

“Coming up. Are you surfing?”

“Nah. Waves are flat, so we’ve been out this morning. What time do you finish, and what are we doing later?” He rests his arms on the counter, and my eyes travel to the flex of his biceps, stretching his t-shirt.

I smile and remember his arms around me. “I’m off at four, and I’m not doing anything later.”

“Great. Mum’s invited you for dinner again, and then we can hang out.”

“Sure. I’ll come up to yours when I’m done.” I hand over the chocolate milkshake and take him in for a moment as he sucks on the straw.

He’s mine.

This gorgeous, older guy is mine. My heart flutters at the thought, and I cling to the feeling as if it’s a life raft in a storm.

“Thank you for dinner, Mrs Roberts.” I close my cutlery on the plate and sip my drink.
