Chapter 2

Romero

Luciana gripped my arm, trying to keep me close to her. It looked as if my little surprise may have caused her some stress.

“Rocco, Sandro,” I extended my hand. “I’m glad you could join us.”

“You invited them?” Lu let out a breath as I shook their hands.

“It’s your birthday.” I kissed her. “I made an exception.”

“Thank you.” Her smile spread across her face and that was all the gratitude I needed. Well, at least until I got her into bed. “That means a lot.”

“I’ve missed you.” She hugged Sandro.

“I miss you too.” He kissed the top of her head. “More than I thought possible.”

“Why didn’t you tell me you were coming?” Lu asked.

“It was a surprise.” Rocco glanced at me. “Did it work?”

“Oh, I’m surprised.” Lu tossed a shocked look in my direction. “I never expected this.”

“That’s why it’s a surprise.” I looked at my guys. “You can disperse,” I said to Salvi. “Everything is fine.”

They left to rejoin the party, but Gio stayed behind.

“How have you been?” Lu asked her cousins.

“The firm is really busy,” Sandro said. “We do miss our favorite paralegal.”

“I’m sure.” Lu rolled her eyes. “I’ve started classes to finish my degree.”

“That’s wonderful.” Rocco nodded. “I wish you nothing but the best.”

“Thanks.” I could tell Lu was conflicted. I didn’t blame her. She was right to be cautious. I was. They were Torrios after all.

“This place is amazing.” Sandro looked around the club. “It’s all anyone talks about. We haven’t been here yet.”

“It’s supposed to be a legitimate venture, but appearances like mine and yours are making it more popular than I could have imagined,” I said. “I don’t know if that’s a blessing or a curse.”

“It’s probably pretty popular with the Feds too.” Rocco gazed around the room. “That can’t be good.”

“It has its disadvantages,” Gio said. “But we deal with it.”

“Let’s go get a drink.” Sandro took Lu’s hand. “We can catch up.”

“Okay.” Lu smiled at me before Sandro whisked her away.

Inviting Rocco and Sandro was the right move. I battled with my ego, but I wanted my wife to be happy.

“Thanks for coming,” I said to Rocco. “Luciana appreciates it.”

“I don’t think she’ll ever forgive me,” he said. “My family was horrible to her.”

“She’s tough.” Gio stared at Luciana as she made her way to the bar. This was the first time Gio and Rocco were together since we found out Rocco could possibly be our sibling. “She has a great life now, thanks to my brother.”

“I didn’t like the idea of the arrangement between our families. I thought it was too much for Lu to handle,” Rocco said. “I thought we were throwing her to the wolves.”
