“You want to, um, buy me?”

“It’s going to happen whether I do or someone else does. That’s just the way this business works. You have your father to thank for the position you’re in, but I can get you out of it.”

“Why would you get involved in this?”

“When I see something I want, I don’t hesitate.”

“What do you want?”

Can she really be that naive?

“You know what?” She stood and headed for the door. “Keep my stuff. I can figure this out on my own.”

Yes, she really is that naive.I bolted from my chair, advancing her, and then pushing my hand against the door, holding it shut as she pulled on the doorknob. No one walks away from me.The sooner she learned that, the better things would go for her.

“You ran from me once, and that’s what started this game.”

“What are you doing? This isn’t a game. This is my life.” She continued to jiggle the knob. “Let me out of here.”

“No.” I spun her around and pressed her against the door. “Your options are extremely limited. It would be in your best interest to hear what I have to offer.”

Her eyes widened when I caressed her cheek.

“Please, stop.” She leaned into my fingers, despite what she said. “I don’t…”

“You’re going to have to get used to me touching you if this arrangement is going to work.”

What arrangement?” Her gaze followed my fingers as I stroked her jaw, making my way to her lips. The heat of her breath inundated the pad of my thumb as I swiped it down her bottom lip.

Why are you so tempting?

“Your skin is so soft.” I moved closer to her; the proximity drove me crazy with desire. “I want to touch every inch of you.”

She swallowed hard enough that her throat moved, enticing me to trail my fingers down her neck and to the subtle dip between her breasts.

“You can’t keep me here,” she said. “I want to leave.”

Her body tensed as she stood frozen. The uncertainty in her face lured me in. Her vulnerability drew me to her. I had a burning desire to protect her. To make her mine. Her resistance only made me want her more.

“Don’t you want to hear my offer?” I stopped touching her and put a few inches between us. “It will be quite beneficial for you. For us.”

“I said I want to leave.”

“I think you can spare me a few minutes to hear what I have to say.” I pointed to the sofa. “Sit down.”

She stared at the sofa for a few seconds, pondering my words before hurrying past me and taking a seat.

That’s better.

“After I’ve presented my idea, if you don’t like what I’ve proposed, you can leave.”

“With my things?”

“If that’s what you want.”I’m betting you won’t leave.

“I’ll listen.”

“As I said, your father borrowed money from some vicious people. The kind of men you do not want to find yourself alone with. You do not want to owe them anything. Once they have you, there won’t be anything I can do for you.”
