If anyone deserved to be dragged through the desert, it was the pompous ass who’d fucked my grades up. Not that many people were on the floor. A few study groups were tucked to the side.

I leaned on the table and closed my eyes for a second. Something was happening. First Foxyn’s rumors and then Theon’s. And now I had a fucking F. Shit wasn’t adding up. No matter how hard I asked around, no one knew anything.

The table rocked a bit, and my eyes flashed open. I hadn’t even noticed I wasn’t alone anymore. My back stiffened automatically at the unknown threat so close.

“Are you ready for tutoring?”

Familiarity settled in the middle of my chest like a rock, but I ignored it. I didn’t need this piece of shit. I’d gotten to college on my own, and I’d continued to do it that way. The only people I ever leaned on were my two best friends. There was no trust or need for anyone else.

“Look, there was a mistake. I don’t need your assistance. So, go tell the professor you met up with me, and we can both go about our day.”

“Okay, if that’s what you want, but shouldn’t you at least see what I have to offer before you dismiss me?”

Again, I was hit with the feeling I knew that voice from somewhere. It shouldn’t matter to me, but something kept pestering me that it was.

Of course, I was assigned the one tutor who thought they could outsmart me. I put my phone away and turned to look at the guy. My rebuttal died on my tongue as I looked into big brown eyes that I’d seen shimmer with tears more times than I could count.

“Ramsey Laureati.”

A slow smile appeared on his face. “I don’t think you’ve ever called me by my name. It’s always been dumbass, spineless, or what was the one you really favored?” His gaze never wavered from mine as he thought about the name I used to call him so often.

“Pequeño puta,” I said.

“Yeah, that’s the one.” Ramsey smiled as if it was a happy memory for him and not one that left him crying multiple times.

“What are you doing here?” I asked.

“Easy. Here to tutor you.” He took a chair at the library table. “I have the questions for the next tests and even the answers.” He waved the folder in my face taunting me.

“I don’t need that.” I didn’t trust him for a second. There was no way in hell this guy who we practically tortured for an entire year suddenly wanted to help me. I wasn’t buying the bullshit.

“I can see the distrust in your eyes.” Ramsey frowned and placed the folder down. “I just want to help you. I know this teacher has it out for you, and what better way to show him up than getting a perfect score on the next test.”

He wasn’t wrong. Professor Billups hated me the moment I stepped into his class, but I held my own this entire time. Or so I’d thought. Still couldn’t believe I had a failing grade.

“You know, I knew you would be the first to recognize me.” Ramsey pushed the folder over to me, locked his fingers together, and rested his chin on his hands. His brown hair fell in waves around his face. It had been so much shorter when we were kids.

He looks good, doesn’t he?

Yeah.

I blinked.Where had that thought come from?

I rolled my shoulders, trying to discard the strange tension building in the middle of them and focused on Ramsey. “You haven’t changed much.”

“That’s not fair. I changed a lot. It’s been six years.” Ramsey’s eyelids lowered, and it felt like the air around us shifted. Everyone in the library practically disappeared. “I’m not the same old dumbass from back then.”

Ramsey stood up and, in a few steps, was in front of me. Although he was shorter than me, my attention was pulled down to him like metal to a magnet.

“It’s going to take a lot more to make me cry now,” Ramsey said teasingly.

Remember how he used to plead? No one whimpers like him.

My heart skipped a beat as the palms of my hands itched to wrap around Ramsey’s slender throat. If I squeeze hard enough, will he gasp for me to stop?

“Do it,” Ramsey whispered, his eyes daring me to follow through with my thoughts.

I reached up before I’d even given my body the go-ahead.
