“No.” Then Coach moves to shut the office door. I surge forward, my fist striking the door to keep it from closing.

“When did you last speak to her?” I ask.

Coach looks shocked. “What is this about?”

“She’s missing, and we need to find her,” I reply.

Savannah adds, “Her phone and keys were left in her unlocked car at school.”

“At school?” He couldn’t look more annoyed. “Probably another one of her stunts.”

Ryder tells him, “Your daughter might be in trouble. The least you can do is answer a simple fucking question.”

Coach moves forward at the same time Ryder steps toward him, the two are nose-to-nose before I register the hostility between them is worse than the frustration I’m feeling towards the man that doesn’t give a fuck about his daughter. Apparently the sentiment extends to his son also. “I would if you asked one worthwhile.”

I attempt to split them up, pulling at Ryder as I shift in front of him, my back to him as I keep my face pointed at Coach. “Answer the question or find yourself a new fucking quarterback.”

That is the first time his expression actually resembles concern. There’s still annoyance as he looks down. “I don’t know. After the game Friday night. She was with y’all at the hotel all weekend, wasn’t she?”

“Yes,” Savannah replies.

I keep my stare locked on the man I’m coming to hate as much as my own father. They’re both pieces of shit.

“Let’s go,” Neil suggests as he pulls at my arm. He’s trying to diffuse the situation as usual. As furious as I am, he’s right. This isn’t helping. But I don’t know what to do.

“What now?” I ask Ryder, but he simply shakes his head. He’s at a loss too. Or maybe he’s just like me—too scared to think clearly.

What the hell?I try to pry my heavy eyes open, but it doesn’t work. I feel drunk. No, not drunk. Drugged.

That’s when it comes back to me. Talking to Ava in the school parking lot. Someone grabbing me from behind. Lenny.

There’re muffled voices in the distance, and I think it’s them. I will my eyes to open, and finally they do. Glancing around, all I can tell is it’s dark. And dirty. My eyes don’t want to work with me as I try to focus on anything around me. Everything looks chaotic.

When I go to move my arms, I realize my hands are bound to something above my head. My fingers feel metal, like a pipe or railing, and I’m sitting on a hard, tiled floor. My feet are bare. Where are my shoes? It takes me a few good minutes before it dawns on me—an abandoned hospital. I think. Things still feel really weird as I blink and look around for a few seconds. I don’t recognize the place, but from the old equipment and hospital bed nearby, it’s definitely some kind of medical facility. Or used to be one.

Okay. What in the actual fuck is going on?

“Look who’s finally awake,” Lenny says as he stoops down next to me. “How was your nap, princess?”

I don’t know what they’re planning, but one thing they won’t get from me is fear. “It was great, asswipe.” I look over to see where Ava is watching. I don’t bother asking her to help me out of this. This was her. She was the one talking to me when it happened. She knew and was in on it. “If y’all are wanting a threesome, I’m not fucking interested.”

Her look of disgust says that’s not what she had in mind. Lenny reaches behind my head, gripping my hair as he gets in my face. “The more you’re a bitch, the more it’s gonna hurt.”

A surge of panic flows through me, but I do my best to keep the feeling off my face. “Untie my hands and let’s go, motherfucker. Hit for hit. I’ll show you pain.”

He laughs and leans back to take a full look over me. “You’re going to make this so worth the trouble.”

I have a smile on my face as my head drops back to the wall. “I heard you’re not worth the trouble.”

He surges forward with anger, his hand coming out and striking me in the mouth. Fuck. That hurt. But I won’t let him see that.

“Lenny,” Ava says, sounding unsure.

I laugh through the pain and look up to him. “Your bitch is already having second thoughts.”
