NICO MOLENTI

Minutes tick past, the clock on the wall tapping to the beat. Each second grates on my nerves, making me angrier than I already am.

“I have nothing left to give you. You have everything,” the sad excuse for a man says as he sits tied to a chair in front of Sebastian and I.

“Stop lying!” Sebastian growls, face twisted from frustration. And I don’t blame him. This man tried to take everything from us. He thought that with all his millions, he could simply walk in, change the way business is done in New York, and push us out in the process. The family I have come to know and love would have all perished if this man was successful. But he is hiding something, and unfortunately for him, both Sebastian and I can feel it.

Brian Cole was one of the wealthiest men in New York. But he was greedy. He still wanted more. He wanted to run the streets, run the ports, and run the politics. That is our foothold. I may be the youngest brother of the New York Mafia, but my blood runs for them, just as theirs runs for me.

“But I have nothing. NOTHING!” he shouts, showing a sudden change in demeanor. He must know he is near the end because his voice pleads to us the longer this goes on, dripping with desperation, still hopeful his heart will beat after today. That we will let him go.

“You have taken my money, my businesses, my property...”

“Your son,” I add, dropping the words like lead into the silent room, filling in the gaps of his memory as I stand in front of him. Staring down at the pathetic excuse for a man that he is, I feel nothing. It is true. We did, in fact, kill his son Daniel. His pride and joy. Well, Carter did. Carter was more than ready to end that fucker’s life after everything he did to Doc, so he had to die. That was personal for him. But this. Right here, right now. This is something I know very well.

This is business.

“So now it’s your time. Your debt is still not paid in full. You planned to end us, so we will offer you the same courtesy,” Sebastian says simply, and I grin. Sebastian is like an older brother to me. All the boys are, but he is the one who has really taken me under his wing, and I would do anything for him. Anything for this group of men who are now my family, including hurting someone to get the information we need. Potentially killing him. I will take blood and bleed for my family; it is what I am committed to do.

Sweat beads along Brian’s forehead, trailing down his fat face as he looks up at us. His emotions remain skittish, going from outraged to despondent, because at this point, he knows he has to die. Only, we want everything from him first. Once he has nothing else to give us, nothing else of value, we will take his life.

We stand before him in a small cement block room, hidden deep in the basement of our compound. Our cell. We don’t use it much, but for the past few weeks, this has been his home. In the cold, dark and damp recess of the New York Mob headquarters. He will never see sunlight again. His son is long gone, his businesses sold or burnt to the ground. Brian Cole is no longer a man about town, flaunting his wealth. He is a man who has lost absolutely everything.

Of course, we set up the media landscape, providing them with information of his fraudulent activities and his undesirable business contacts. So far, our hands are clean, and no one has picked up that we even know who he is. Just the way we like it. We have been through his paperwork, and most of his digital files, but we are still missing something, and we need to get to the bottom of what that is.

“Times up, Brian,” I say as I step toward him, rolling up my sleeves, ready to get dirty to get revenge for our family. My hands clench and unclench, eager to feel his skin break underneath my fists. The need to hurt him runs through my blood. I’m ready to end his miserable life as I cock my fist back to knock him out.

“WAIT!” he screams, his eyes wide, and I pause. I haven’t even touched him, and he is already in a hurry to give us what we want.

“I have something else. I have something you can have. But then we are even.” It’s laughable how this man still doesn’t seem to understand the situation. We willneverbe even.

“What?” Sebastian steps up next to me and eyes him suspiciously.

“My daughter. You can have my daughter.” He smiles, like he thinks he has just saved himself. I feel Sebastian bristle beside me because we don’t deal with human trafficking. We love women, cherish them, and treat them well.

“We don’t steal women, asshole. Your sick dealings are of no interest to us,” I say through gritted teeth. I knew he had a daughter. Sebastian has checked her out and, apparently, she is not part of Brian’s activities. She doesn’t seem to have much of a relationship with him at all, which makes me wonder why he is ratting her out to the mob.

“Not for pleasure, not to sell, but for business,” he clarifies, and my brows pinch together.

Now he has my attention.

“Spit it out. You are talking in riddles.” I grab him by the collar, growing increasingly impatient.

“She’s a lawyer, a good one. She can work with you, for you.” I give nothing away before I punch him across the cheek and finally knock him out cold.

We need time to think.

EMILIA COLE

My heels click on the pavement as I run down the street to the office. Late as usual.

I had a meeting that went for hours yesterday afternoon, and by the time I got home and finished the paperwork, it was past one in the morning. It would have been a lot quicker had my potential new client not had a serious case ofI can’t stop looking at your chest to actually explain my legal situation to you.I get more of them now, the type I’d rather not be working with. Ever since my poor excuse for a father went down in flames, something I have been trying to distance myself from for the past few weeks since it all came to light.

Today, however, I made sure my corporate attire is exactly that. Black pencil skirt, pink blouse, and a large black trench coat, which is doing nothing to combat the chill in the air today. The wind whirls through the street, the sun blocked by the tall buildings as I stay in the dark shadows of the early morning, hurrying to get to my office to start my day.
