“Brian Cole’s wife. Her name was Jacqueline. She died in an apparent car accident about twenty years ago.” I state the facts as I know them.

“Yes. I saw her file when I was going through Brian’s case,” Rory says, thinking it over.

“I don’t think it was a car accident, and I want to know the details.” I can see Sebastian eyeing me suspiciously from my peripheral.

“Fine. I will look into it. I will get you the file. Odd…” Rory says, then pauses.

“What?” Sebastian asks him, the two of us now watching his expression shift.

“Well, I looked into that car accident for Doctor Wakeford’s wife for you too. They would have happened around the same time, I think…” It’s clear his mind is now turning.

“Yes. We know.” It isn’t a coincidence. I am sure both men colluded at the time. Stupid cops had no idea back then.

“Fine. Anything else?” Rory asks, throwing back the remaining whiskey.

“Not today. Thanks, Rory,” Sebastian says, shaking his hand again. I do the same, slipping some cash into his at the same time, making sure he is well paid for his time. Rory now has enough money from us to fund college for both of his children when that time comes. No doubt he will have a very nice Christmas this year as well, because we are generous. A fact I know he appreciates. Our boys walk him out the back of the club to his car. Ensuring he is not seen and is well protected until he is far away from here. He is a good informant, but even now, ten years later, we can’t be too careful. Every meeting needs to be timed properly, moving locations regularly and often at the last minute. The logistics of being in the mob are exhausting at times.

As soon as our office door closes, we sit back and Sebastian’s eyes are on me.

“Her mother?” he asks.

“Yeah. I think Brian killed her,” I state, leaving no room for questions. Wishing I could just torture the man for this information because it would be much easier. But we can’t kill him, and he knows it.

“Nico. She is not our priority. Brian Cole is our priority and finding out who is funding him,” Sebastian warns me.

“I know. Fuck, I know.” I jump up and start to pace the room.

Sebastian leans back in his chair and watches me.

“You need to be careful, Nico. Women make you do stupid things.” I stop pacing and look at him.

“I’m fine,” I grit out. And I am, but Emilia is like a drug, one I need desperately. All the time. She is consuming me, and I want to let her. I wonder if what I am feeling is normal.

“Looks like it,” Sebastian says with a smirk, taking another sip of his whiskey.

“Is she happy playing house in our compound? Are the two of you together, or are you just fucking her? Because, like I’ve mentioned, I think we should keep her on after this debacle with her father is dealt with. She has some serious skills, skills we could use in the business, so whatever you are doing, you should stop if it’s not serious. We don’t need complications,” Sebastian says, and he is right. She is an asset. A very fucking beautiful asset.

“I am fucking her and not planning on stopping. She is ingrained in me, Sebastian.” My heart pulsates in my chest just at the thought of her. Sebastian is the closest I have to a brother, so I look to him for guidance often. Now is one of those times. He watches me, looking for a sign that I am joking, but I am not. I am seriously fucked for this woman.

“How did you handle it all when you first met Goldie?” I ask him. I wasn’t around him in the early days. I came into the family just after they met.

“I nearly fucking killed her father. Set her mother up in a financially safe and secure home, redesigned the entire mega club, so I didn’t encroach into her gallery, which cost me millions, and purchased a picture of her for over fifty grand… all before I even slept with her.” He scoffs, and I smile. Sebastian’s foray into his relationship makes me feel normal again.

“Like I said, women make you do stupid things,” he repeats, swirling his drink.

“She is finding out a lot of personal information going through the boxes. I just wanted to close one of those loops for her. Make it easier for her,” I say before taking a seat again.

“Admirable, but she might have a different opinion of you once she knows her father has been living in our cell right underneath her this past month. No matter how bad he has been to her, he is still her father. Her only living relative. She might hate him, but she might hate you more for lying to her.”

Sebastian is right again, of course. Not telling Emilia her father is in our cell is hanging over my head like a dark cloud. But that is mob business. Not any business of hers.

“She only has a few boxes left. We should be finished by tomorrow. I still can’t believe we haven’t found a fucking thing. Her head has been in those boxes since she arrived at the compound almost two months ago, and nothing.” I crack my knuckles in annoyance.

“We are close, Nico. I can feel it. We will know who we are dealing with very soon,” Sebastian says, a faraway look on his face.

“And then?” I prod him.

“And then, we end them all.”
