My sighed resignation is not missed by anyone. “Hey, Jen, you busy on Saturday? Vivi needs a date to her dad’s party.”

“Oh my god! Adalee!” Her squeal is exactly what I needed.

“That so.” Jensen’s cocky swagger rears its head.

“She’s not into douchebags. Cool it.” He laughs. Viv sighs, and I believe she bangs her head on a table or wall when I hear a thud.

“I’ll be anything she needs me to be.” That sounds more like a threat than a promise.

Rolling my eyes at him, I walk away and listen to Vivian chatter on about the party and things she’ll need to buy. “You’ll help me set up, right? Then we can get ready together. Do you have a white dress? Maybe we should go shopping too. What do you think, Adalee?”

“I think you should take a breath,” I laugh. When she gets excited, she talks in run-on sentences and forgets to breathe.

Her laughter is followed up with, “Albertson’s is getting new stock today. We could go shopping tomorrow morning before we pick up my dad from the base.”

Tears prick my eyes at her thoughtful suggestion. Vivi knows I don’t have any money, that I work obscene hours to pay for everything, and rarely do I have anything left over. Albertson’s is better than most thrift stores because they seem to get the high-quality stuff and sell it for rock-bottom prices. They don’t believe in price gouging like most thrift stores do. And because of that, they often get brand-new clothes from retailers as well.

“Sounds good,” I say before we hang up.

My nerves make me want to vomit. I don’t know why I sent that silly letter. I never should have. I should have just kept my damn mouth shut.

CHAPTER3

CALLUM

Ihave no clue if my admirer replied to me or not. I was off base for about two weeks after I emailed my letter to Viv, and it’s taken close to a week to get home. Between weather and delays, I’m exhausted and bitchy. All I want is a hot shower, a warm bed, and a willing woman.

The fucking problem is that the willing woman I keep picturing is Adalee. I have no clue why, but the more I try to figure out who sent me that confession letter, the more I believe it’s her. There is no one else that would. My life revolves around the Army and Vivian. Which includes Adalee.

Before seeing her over the summer, it had been nearing two years since I’d last run into her. I was deployed, it seemed, one tour after another in constant succession. Which makes the decision I finally settled on that much easier. Once my current contract is up, I’m retiring.

I have every intention of spending at least two years fucking around the house to finish renovations, and after that, I can figure out what to do with my life. I’m still young, and if things go the way I hope, then I’ll be spending that time fucking Adalee as much as possible, too.

Christ, she’s officially inside me. Infecting me, and I have zero desire to set her free. At this point, I’m not sure I care who sent me that letter because all I want is Adalee James.

“Dad!” Stepping out of the building entrance, I see Vivian running towards me at breakneck speed. Dropping my bag, I brace myself for the force of her jump, just in time, so we don’t fall backwards. “I missed you.” Her arms squeeze around my neck in a light chokehold.

“Missed you too, kid.” My eyes laser in on where Adalee is standing by the car.

Wearing a mid-thigh blue tennis skirt, matching blue crop top, and a pair of wedge sandals, with her hair loose around her face and neck, I’m dying to get my hands on her. If I want my intentions known, I’ll have to start working her, now.

“That Adalee with you?” I keep the question casual as I release Vivian and grab my bag.

Gripping my hand, she turns to glance at her friend before smiling brightly. “Of course! It wouldn’t be a homecoming without both your girls here!”

You have no idea.

I still haven’t worked out how to tell Vivian that I have every intention of convincing Adalee that she’s meant to be mine. I think she’ll be okay with it, especially since she’s always harping on me to find love and settle down and create a family now that she’s out of the house. The truth is, Vivi is my family, the most important part, and I need to know she will be okay with whom I choose as mine.

“Adalee, nice to see you.” Playing it cool has never been a strong suit of mine, so I don’t hesitate to bring her in for a hug, lifting with a forearm around her thighs and holding her tight to my chest. “Mercy, it is nice to see you again.” I breathe her in—fresh rain and something sweet—before giving her an open-mouthed kiss on the neck, flicking my tongue against her racing pulse. She shivers in my arms but doesn’t let go or protest.

“Major Knight.” She’s breathless, but I can feel her heart pounding against my chest.

Sliding her down my body, I keep my hand on the back of her leg until it’s under her skirt and cupping her round ass cheek. My fingers are just a swift move away from petting her pussy. Grazing my fingertips across her flesh, I’m reluctant to let her go. When I do finally pull back and get a look at her face, I know she felt what I did.

She's flushed, her breathing heavy. And her eyes are filled with a lust I know she doesn’t understand. Adalee has no idea how to interpret what I just did. Hearing Vivi clear her throat as the trunk of her car slams shut, I know she just witnessed the heated exchange, and from the sly smile on her face, I realize I don’t need to say a thing about my intentions, nor do I have to worry she’s against it.

Tossing me the keys, she hops in the back seat so that Adalee sits up front with me. Her toned thighs keep me distracted as I continue to drive until Vivian requests I drop her off at the mall as we’re about to pass it, with the excuse that she's forgotten some things. When she insists that Adalee go home with me, I recognize something's up, and I know it has to do with what she saw at the military base.
