The butthead laughs. “You’ve got it.”

“I think I’m dying,” I whimper from my spot on the floor.

It’s official, I hate my sister. She’s a big meanie, and I’m never speaking to her again.

Earlier she picked me up, and as soon as I saw Abby in her little bootie shorts and sports bra, I was immediately jealous. She’s had three kids (Natalie is her adopted daughter) and is lean and tight where she should be.

She brought me a pair of her bootie shorts and a sports bra tank top—Abby’s such a mom—and brought me a bottle of water too. When we got here, I was immediately intimidated by all the ripped men and women. First, I had to sign a release, and then Abby introduced me to a couple of her friends.

After that I don’t remember anything, which brings me to now. I’m face down on a mat in the corner and my bitchface sister is laughing hysterically at me. I’m a sweaty, stinky mess right now, but I can’t drum up enough energy to care.

“Come on, Haddie. You can’t stay here all day.”

I open my eyes to see her lying on the floor looking at me. Instead of answering, I hold up my hand and give her the finger. She stands up and holds her hand out to me. I let her pull me up until I’m standing. I feel like a newborn foal and my legs feel all jiggly.

It’s not lost on me that Abby’s Crossfit buddies are all laughing at me as we walk by. “I seriously hate your guts,” I tell her as we step outside.

After Abby drops me off, I take a long hot bath in a tub filled with Epsom salts. When I climb out of my tub, I wrap a towel around myself and grab my bottle of ibuprofen. After swallowing them down I change into something comfy and crawl into my bed to promptly pass out.

Chris

The club is loud and the girls may be hot, but I’m just not feeling it.

When some buddies had invited me out I thought it would be a good idea. Have some drinks, maybe get my dick sucked, and blow off some steam. Now that I’m here I’ve declined a drink, and I’m just not in the mood for any female companionship. I duck out early and text my dad.

Chris: Are you up?

It takes a minute before the dots start bouncing.

Dad: I am.

Chris: Is it okay if I come over?

Dad: Of course, you don’t ever need to ask. I’m not sure how I got so lucky to have parents that still love me even though I’ve been a major asshole and disappointment to them.

I make my way across town and pull onto my parents’ street. As a kid I terrorized this neighborhood; fucking shit up and acting like my shit didn’t stink. Hell, I was like that at school too. I got the best-looking girls, I played every sport even though I wasn’t that great, when I tried, I got good grades, and none of that shit means a damn thing now.

I blow out a breath as I pull into my parents’ driveway. My dad will know something’s up, and I can’t let him see me like that. He’s got more important shit to deal with. Speaking of my dad, he opens the front door as I shut my car off.

“Hi, son. What brings you by?”

I follow him inside. “I was out with some friends and just didn’t feel like hanging out with them anymore. How’s Mom?”

“She’s been sleeping most of the day. Her stomach has been bothering her.” My eyes burn, knowing the end is inevitable. I follow him into the kitchen and he grabs two beers out of the refrigerator. I take one, twisting the cap off. “This next week I have a meeting in Atlanta that I have to go to. I’ll only be gone a day and half and I’m flying so it won’t take me long to get back. I spoke to Haddie and she’s going to stay here and take care of your mom. If you could stop by and check in on them that would be good.”

“I can definitely do that.”

I finish my beer and go look in on Mom. Her color is concerning and her breathing seems slightly off. My dad puts his hand on my shoulder. “She’s okay, I promise.” I know he’s lying to me, but honestly I appreciate it right now.

We step back into the hall. “Is it okay if I stay here tonight?” I just don’t feel like I should leave.

“Of course. You can sleep in your old room, one of the guest rooms, or the couch.” He grabs me a spare toothbrush and I head into my old room. I don’t have any clothes with me, so after brushing my teeth I strip down to my boxer briefs. I put my hands behind my head and stare up at the ceiling.

I glance out the window and see the moon shining bright. I close my eyes and make a wish, say a prayer, and beg for my mom to be spared. I’m not sure how long I lay here staring out the window before I finally feel exhaustion claim me.

I grab my duffle bag out of the backseat of my car and walk past Haddie’s car as I head to the front door. I use my key to let myself in and drop my bag in the foyer. “Haddie?” I call out.

I listen intently and hear a muffled voice call out in the family room. Once I reach them I stop in the doorway. Mom is sitting up with Haddie right next to her. They’re watching something on an iPad.
