These guys were as bad as we were. I wasn’t even surewhothey were. They hadn’t told us jack shit yet.
Zinnia and Colby shared a look of commissary. Colby pulled the guys aside and spoke with them again.
“Please, Keller. Go sit down. We have to show we’re willing to cooperate. Someone has to be first.” Her eyes begged me.
Fuck if I could deny her when she was looking at me like that. As much as I hated to, I turned and went back to take my seat at the table. A few minutes later Colby’s crew did the same, Brandon with them.
CHAPTER12
Zinnia
Istepped out into the hall and shut the door behind me. Leaning back against it, I smiled at Colby. She returned it. We were both being cautious. “Thank you for speaking with me alone.”
“You’re welcome,” she replied. I could see the look of relief in her eyes. Being around that much testosterone, and balancing it… It was nice to be alone with another woman.
“I just wanted to ask…without anyone else present, why do you want to do this?” I didn’t want to help her disappear if she was being forced to do so. The fact that those men had listened to her request to speak to me told me that likely wasn’t the case, but I had to check.
Her smile brightened. “I-” A flush reddened her cheeks and she broke eye contact. Clearing her throat, she tried again. “I love them and I want to stay with them.”
My eyes widened. “...lovethem.”
“I know it isn’t the norm,” she said, finally meeting my eyes again. “But yes. Them.”
“So, you’re in a relationship with all three of them?” My mind couldn’t help wandering to the four men who made up my team. Is that something men would be…open to? How did it even work?
She must have seen the rabid curiosity in my eyes because she laughed. “I reacted the same way when they told me they planned to keep and share me.”
“Keep you? Share you?”
“I’ll tell that part of the story to everyone. At least the keeping part,” she said with a smile.
“Okay,” I agreed. “Can I ask you about-” Was it rude to be questioning the way she was choosing to live her life? Probably. I pursed my lips together. “Nevermind.”
“I don’t mind answering. I have a separate relationship with all three of them.”
“And they don’t get jealous?”
“Sometimes. You have to juggle and make sure that you’re not favoring one over the others. But otherwise? No. They’ve been friends and have lived together since they were eighteen. I guess they’re just used to sharing with each other. If someone else tried to come into our group though?” She made a cringing face.
“I could only imagine,” I said, laughing. They were very protective, and now that made sense as to why.
Her hand went to her flat belly. It was an inconspicuous movement, but I’d been trained to pick up on the smallest details.
“Are you pregnant?” It was blunt, and rude, but asking questions was a habit from my job and I could no more stop the words from tumbling past my lips than I could pause my heart beat.
Her cheeks pinkened again, but there was a deliriously happy look in her eyes. “I am.”
“Congratulations,” I told her. I managed to keep myself from blurting another question asking which one was the father. Their sex life was none of my business. “Like I said, I just wanted to make sure that this was whatyouwanted.”
“It is,” she assured me in a soft voice. Smiling in a knowing way, “You’ll see.”
What the hell was that supposed to mean? Pushing that aside I responded. “You realize that means you can never come back to the U.S., right? You’ll be presumed dead, but you can’t be spotted there.”
“I understand,” she replied. “I just want to be free to live with the men I love and our children. We can do that anywhere in the world, so long as we’re together.”
“Okay,” my heart melted at the pure devotion that dripped from each syllable she spoke. “Let’s go back in.” I opened the door and let her walk in first.
All the men were watching us curiously as we came back inside. I shook my head at my team. What we’d talked about didn’t need to be voiced here. That was why I spoke with her privately in the first place.
