“It would make sense, if the two are working together,” Tyr said.

Dad sucked in a tight breath through his nose. “I should have known that jail sentence wouldn’t be long enough.”

“Do you think she’s the reason Garmr found me again here?” I asked. “Aya has been protecting me since that near-deadly day, so I can’t see how he’d be able to find us without help.”

He nodded. “Safe to assume that’s correct. She has connections like I do. It’s why I didn’t bother changing our names or keeping you away from anything that tracked our identities. She’d be able to find us regardless, so there wasn’t a point in causing you more problems.”

“And if they realized it was me there that day, then all they’d have to do is find someone with the ability to sense wards,” Aya said. “All wards carry the signature of their caster. It’s how we make territory markers for our homes.”

“But because you never left Astrid’s side, she stayed protected,” Diego added. “This shifter is damned determined if he’s going to wait over two decades to find a weak point in her protection.”

“And cocky if he didn’t try to kill her at the festival,” Tyr grumbled.

I shook my head. “I have a feeling he didn’t think he’d be able to get away with it. There were too many allies moving about for him to attack me unnoticed. That’s why he waited for me to leave the barrier alone.”

Dad leaned back. “We’re going to need a good plan, on top of the training. I’ll talk with Urd about what contacts and supplies we can utilize. And I’m going to have to pull my gear out of storage, it seems. Never thought I’d do that, at least not for some time.”

I smirked. “Badass dad, incoming.”

He roared with laughter.

“I think I’m a little done with doom and gloom,” I said. “I want to know about your trip.”

Diego stood. “I’m going to go check on Dad. Hopefully, he’s calmed down enough to want to be around me.”

I wished him luck and let him know I could feel that Angel was with him. My bond with her was definitely stronger now. I also took his glass to finish off the wine he wasn’t interested in anymore.

“Arran and Hurrit send their regards,” Dad said, grabbing the bottle of wine off the coffee table.

“I have to ask, are they immortals, too?”

He smirked. “Water horses. Well, Arran will fight you to call him a kelpie, but they’re the same thing, just different regional origins.”

I rolled my eyes.Of course.“I guess now I really have to go with you on the next trip.”

Dad pressed a hand to his chest. “I’m hurt, Ace. Sounds like you don’t enjoy those trips.”

“Oh, I love the hunting and fishing trips. I just don’t love being replaced.” I raised my voice enough for Diego to hear me as he exited the house.

“I didn’t replace you, Cielo!”

Dad laughed and then regaled me with his and Xavier’s adventure in the Canadian wilderness.

Chapter Twenty-Nine

Diego

Slow,steady breaths.

Focus.

Concentrate.

Find it.

Each step Mom had instructed swirled through my head. I tried to follow them as she gave them, keeping my eyes closed to block out distracting stimuli.

I let out a frustrated breath and opened my eyes when nothing happened. “It’s not working.”
