“Ready for the day, girl?” I asked Angel.

She groaned in response.

I shrugged and turned away. “Okay, suit yourself.”

I’d taken only two steps when Angel bolted from her spot and tore out of the room. I barked out a hard laugh. Her morning antics never ceased to amuse me. And I wasn’t the only one from the laughter downstairs.

By the time I made it to the first floor, Diego had stepped out with Angel. Carrie was cleaning the kitchen, and Tyr sat at the breakfast nook staring out the window while sipping on what smelled like coffee. Aya typed away on her laptop as always, nibbling on some toast. The two of them didn’t appear tense, so it seemed this morning they were getting along again.

The last few days had been okay between them. Tyr usually kept his distance, but I’d caught the two conversing a few times, and thankfully, no more incidents had transpired.

Raeni wasn’t around, though I suspected she’d gone to hang out with some friends. I remembered her asking her mom about it last night.

I greeted everyone before grabbing myself a hot mug of coffee. Aya smiled as she looked up from her computer, but it didn’t remain. Her brow furrowed. “What’s wrong, Astrid?”

I paused mid-sip. “Huh?”

“You look like something is bothering you.”

Carrie and Tyr turned to look at me. I shrugged and took a seat next to her. “Had a weird dream. Haven’t been able to shake it. Hoping the coffee helps.”

She turned to face me. “What was it about?”

I pursed my lips. Aya was always asking people about their dreams. “I was standing at the top of a beautiful fjord. Then, out of nowhere, a blonde woman with black wings swooped out of the air and started talking to me like she knew me and then said something about me flying… or something like that.”

I squinted. I’d known her name too, but now it escaped me.Must not have been important.

“That does sound odd,” Carrie agreed. “Especially since Diego said he had a flying dream last night.”

My brow arched, and she shrugged. “Coincidence, I guess.”

I sipped my coffee. “Maybe…”

Why couldn’t I shake the feeling it wasn’t?Dad always says there’s no such things as coincidences.

Aya and Tyr didn’t make any comments about my dream, though I swore they passed each other a strange look. I had to be imagining that part.

“What are everyone’s plans today?” I asked. I figured it was best to steer topics away from dreams.

“I have a freelance project due soon,” Aya said, typing away on her keys again.

“Don’t know yet,” Tyr said. “Might work on that woodpile some more.”

I nodded. While I didn’t think he needed to work on it much more for a while with how much he achieved yesterday, I wouldn’t tell him how to spend his time.

I turned to Carrie, who had a shit-eating grin. “You’re up to something.”

“I am,” she said. “I have a working interview in a few hours.”

My back straightened. “What? Really? When did this happen?”

Last I knew, she’d still been too nervous to take up work, in fear of running into people who triggered her trauma responses.

Carrie rocked her head back and forth. “Jessie has been trying to convince me to come work for her for some time. I saw her while shopping in town last week, and we got to talking. She offered to let me try out a few hours to see how I do, and after some thinking, and talking with Diego in my last session, I decided to give it a try.”

I smiled widely. “That’s fantastic, Carrie! I know you’ll do great.”

“I’ll be doing everything I can to do well. I owe it to my daughter to get back on my feet and provide for her again.”
