But was it really?

My sight suddenly picked up a flash of purple. I jerked my head up and came face to face with a large bouquet of purple flowers. Stunned, I merely blinked at the offering.

“While disheartening at times, there was always a chance for a new opportunity at love,” Aya said, amusement in her voice.

I lifted my eyes above the bouquet to find Tyr crouched in front of me. He smirked. I looked back down at the beautiful arrangement, memories stirring of a day in the village when he’d presented me with an arrangement very similar to this.

I then became a little suspicious, and didn’t hide it. “You’d better not smack me with these, either.”

Tyr chuckled and thenboopedmy nose with one of the flowers sticking farther out than the rest. “Just for them, I had to.”

I smiled despite myself, and took the offered bouquet. “I can accept that.”

He watched me with an expectant gaze. When I didn’t immediately understand what he was waiting for, his eyebrow cocked. “Well?”

“Well, what?” I asked. “I’m waiting for you to continue to impress me.”

He adjusted his weight, and a wicked smirk slipped up his handsome face. “I do believe that for this demonstration, that’s been assumed.”

Aya talked in the background, heckling the two of us while still keeping to her presentation. I ignored it, refusing to back down with Tyr. He was trying to avoid something, and as we stared at each other, my past pieced itself together as to why.

He blew out a breath. “You’re really going to make me do this, aren’t you?”

I smirked. “Absolutely.”

Tyr sucked in some air and ran his hand through his hair before reciting a poem.

My love has fair skin, like fresh washed sheep

Her hair is red as if in her enemies blood it has seeped

Her breasts rise and fall like empires when she is asleep.

She is my love, and I have loved her forever.

Her green eyes bring men to their knees in conquests

Sweet aromas come from her skin, tempting the mightiest

Like she has a sachet of Freya’s flowers between her breasts

She is my love, and I have loved her forever.

The crowd laughed while I pressed my lips together. I refused to laugh, no matter how bad that was. “I have to admit, that’s actually better than the first one you recited me.”

He hung his head while chuckling. “I’ll take it.”

“Luckily for Tyr here,” Aya said through barely contained laughter, “good poetry isn’t a requirement to secure an alliance or win a beautiful woman’s heart. A strong, proven warrior like himself would have enough clout to secure a betrothal, and could be seen as impressive enough to give him leverage to woo her.”

When Tyr looked at me again, those stunning blue eyes of his snagged me. “Now that I’ve embarrassed myself in front of an audience, I think it’s only fair you stop withholding your side of this agreement.”

I blinked. “I don’t have anything.”

Truly I didn’t. It wasn’t hard to guess that he was expecting a tunic, too, but I hadn’t finished it. Unlike with Diego’s, where Aya had given me help making it over a matter of weeks, she didn’t with the second one. She only told me the measurements and to go from there. And I’d had less than a week to do it, on top of all my training. Even the time I took during the event wasn’t enough to make it wearable.

“Then what’s that right there?” Tyr asked, gesturing to an area beside me.

I looked, and my heart stopped. The blue tunic I’d tucked away in a basket when I no longer felt like working on it was now neatly folded and on display for everyone to see. I caught a flash of movement and spotted Ùna slipping into the crowd.
