Nora was taking a sip of her drink, her eyes bug out and she sputters, coughing as she tries not to choke.

“It’s… Yeah, none of your business.” She shuts Jaz down, and I smile to myself at her lack of overshare.

Jaz just laughs, not upset in the slightest. She goes back to painting her toes, and I look through the color options she brought over.

Jaz quickly finishes up her own nails, then comes over to me, and helps with my right hand. After the polish dries, we do our facials, and then sit back and snack, while talking about how hot our guys are.

“Where were these guys when I was in high school?” I ask, truly wishing I could have met anyone other than Steven back then. My life would be so different. But then I regret the thought, knowing if I had, I wouldn’t have Zander. I wouldn’t trade him for all the happiness in the world.

“Well, Blake and I are just friends with benefits so…” Jaz lies through her teeth. I can tell because any time she talks about him she has the same look I have when I talk about one of my three guys. It’s also the same look Nora gets with her men.

The urge to pee hits me again and I say, “Ugh, I need to pee again.” I stand up and make my thousandth trip of the day to the bathroom.

Just as I’m finishing up, there’s a knock on the bathroom door.Great.

“Just a second!” I call out, flushing the toilet. I open the door to find Nora standing there looking concerned. “All free now,” I smile, but it doesn't reach my eyes.

“Hey, if what Jaz said upset you, I’m sure she didn’t mean for it to,” Nora says nervously, nibbling on her bottom lip. Then she adds, “Is everything okay? I can ask Owen to write you a prescription for something if you need it.”

For a moment, my heart picks up thinking she knows I’m pregnant, but then I remind myself there’s no way she could know. Only my men, Jaz, and I know, and we’re keeping it that way for now.

“What? Oh, no. I’m fine,” I say, without offering anything further. I step around her, and head down the hall to effectively end that line of conversation.

We just sit back down and make a little small talk, when Jaz grabs her keys saying, “Gotta make a run for some vegan butter!” It’s odd, since nothing we’re eating needs butter, but I don’t question it. She likes weird combinations of things.

She grabs her purse and is almost out the door, when I ask, “Can you get some nacho cheese too?” I have a sudden craving for it. This kid is going to make me gain a million pounds. Internally, I sigh.

Jaz stops and says, “You got it! Nora, want anything?”

Nora shakes her head, “No thanks, babe.”

Jaz disappears behind the door, and the locks click into place. We put on a movie, and I quickly fall asleep. Making another human is exhausting.

19 Black Out

Steven

Pullingoffthehighway,I’m determined that if Heather won’t come back to me, she won’t be going back to those men either. The gun at my back digs into my flesh, but it’s nothing compared to the pain I feel in my chest. It’s so tight that I’m positive I’m on the brink of a heart attack.

It’s all her fault.

That’s okay. She’ll pay, one way or another.

Up ahead, I see her car pulled off to the side of the road, in a small dirt lot. I make sure to box her in as much as I possibly can. She’s not going to escape me again.

A dark head of hair exits Heather’s car and my rage bubbles, until I can’t see. Can’t think. All I can do is feel.

Myphonerings, andI see it’s Heather. I stop walking to my desk at the station and answer it, “Hey, baby. How’s girl's night? I’m just getting ready to go over to Jonas’ to hang with the guys and Zander.”

“Jaz is gone, and she’s not answering her phone. She left to get food thirty minutes ago, but she should be back by now,” her panicked voice immediately puts me on alert.

“Is Nora there with you still?” I clip.

“Yes, she tried calling her, and nothing. So, she called her boyfriend, Kyle. He’s coming over,” her words rush out.
