I scoffed. “I saw them just the other day.”

“You saw your friends in a war meeting. That isn’t exactly quality time, princess. You’re allow to miss them in other ways. You’re allowed torelax.”

Sighing, I tilted my head back. “Am I?”

He was right, though. I was treating this party like a mission and not a fun event. A part of me was waiting for disaster to strike. I still needed to set up defenses so that Beryl couldn’t trap us all in a nightmare and turn the party on its head.

“The only thing I’m letting you do for this party is cook. That’s it. I know you enjoy it, so that’s why I’m letting you have it, or else I would make sure you didn’t lift a finger at all. Let me do everything else for you. As your knight, it’s my job.” He pressed his lips to my forehead again.

Butterflies danced in my stomach. A smile reached my face despite everything still on my plate.

“You’re more than a knight now,” I reminded him as I ran my hands up his chest.

“Mmm, you’re right. I’m your consort, your fuck toy, and your personal guard.”

I couldn’t help but laugh at his list. “Interesting order.”

He nuzzled my neck. “I would have put fuck toy at the top of the list, but consort sounds nice, too.”

He lifted me and set me on the kitchen island so that he could stand between my spread legs. When he gently dragged his teeth along the exposed skin of my neck, I shuddered in his arms.

“Not king?” I tilted my head back so that he had better access to my throat.

“Who gives a fuck about being a king? The only thing I want is to be by your side. I’d rather be your consort and follow your every order.”

I dug my nails into his back as he bit down on my throat. A groan left me and filled the hollow space of the empty apartment. Even the flowers shuddered at the sound.

“What if I wantyouto give the orders…in the bedroom?” My cheeks heated.

He growled and yanked me closer so that I could feel the swollen length of his need. “That is an order I can oblige.”

The fabric of my leggings kept us too far apart. I wished I’d worn a skirt so that he could slide it up my thighs and fill me like I so desperately needed. Every part of me throbbed in anticipation. I couldn’t get enough of him.

The only reason my life was so bearable was because he fucked the stress out of me at night. I couldn’t have asked for a better coping mechanism.

Rhoan laid kisses down my throat and along my chest. I let my head fall back to give him access. When he reached my bosom, he cupped my breasts and buried his face in them. My skin muffled his dramatic groan.

“This is no other fae woman shaped like this. The mortal realm gave you more than just good alliances.” He squeezed and groaned again.

I’d always been on the thinner side, but the stress and changes in my life after Ness overthrew Alvin had me turning to food as a way of comforting myself. That’d led to massive changes in my body that I hadn’t really liked until Rhoan showed his adoration for them. Now I caught him staring at the ample cleavage of my chest and width of my hips.

With him, everything seemed alright. I could handle anything fate thought to throw at me.

That was until the building trembled around us. I grabbed ahold of Rhoan in my panic. He clutched me tight and shielded me with his body. The shaking stopped. I dared to look out from beneath the safety of Rhoan’s massive chest. We both waited, breaths held, as silence settled in once again.

Flower petals and leaves drifted down from the foliage all around us. Without the gentle rain of greenery, I would have thought we’d imagined the building shaking. Several breaths passed, and the building kept still.

“What the hell was that?” I asked.

Rhoan leaned back but didn’t go far. He kept a hand on my thigh in case he still needed to pull me close at the last minute.

I pressed my lips into a firm line and looked to the massive windows. The lake glittered outside, but I knew what was beneath those pretty waters. Beryl’s underground court sat at the far end of the lake. I couldn’t make out her restaurant from here, but I knew it was there. I would have bet good money that the quake had come from there.

I warned Rhoan that I needed to check on something and grabbed ahold of the front of his shirt. Eyes closed, I pushed deep into my arcana and shoved my consciousness into the earth. Like a little worm—don’t ask me, it helped me visualize directing my arcana—I inched towards Beryl’s underground court. Even from here, I could feel the pulsing seed of my power and the foreign arcana wrapped around it, hiding it from Beryl’s sight.

The foreign arcana shuddered as if something struck it. Again, it recoiled.

Beryl had found my seed and she was actively trying to destroy it.
