The kid huffed. “Mommy Milla. Daddy, can we go? I’m bored.” He looked away from us and back towards Adam.

I eyed Texas and Preston giving them silent instruction to keep an eye on them while I strolled far enough away to have a private conversation but still in eye line. My heart thumped unevenly against my chest. This was next level shit.

Sliding my phone out my pocket, I called the one person who’d know what to do. I heard activity in the background as he answered. “What’s the update, Hollis?”

“Uh yeah. There’s an issue.” I paused, breathing heavily through my nose, unable to believe I was saying this. “We’ve got him and two other people, but also akid.A child. Chris… it’s Adam and Milla’s son supposedly.”

Silence. Dead fucking silence from the other end of the line.

“How old?” Chris asked, in a voice that I couldn’t get a read on.

I swung around, glaring in the direction of the child. The boy. “Must be a few years old. At a guess… honestly not sure on kids' ages, they all look the same to me.” I sighed loudly. “What are your orders?”

“Do you believe him?” he replied.

“No idea, he’s pulled the wool over our eyes for years so I can’t decipher his lies from his truths. The kid said Milla’s name, but that could’ve just been drummed into him to repeat,” I admitted. A torrent of anger and sadness for the friendship I believed I’d had with Adam rolled through me. I clenched the phone tighter in my hand.

“Get him and the other adults secured down at ground floor at headquarters. Bring the child to mine, we’ll sort it and get the doctor to run a DNA test to confirm whether it’s true or not.” I worked my jaw side to side, the reality of it being real seemed so far away. Yet not, especially after everything else we’d discovered.

“Keep it together. We’ll get to the bottom of this. Trust me.” He clicked off the call and I closed my eyes for a moment, taking in what he said before turning round and dealing with the situation.

“Get him—” I sneered in Adam’s direction, addressing the team who’d come here with me “—locked inside the van. And them, in a separate one.” I jerked my chin at the older couple, who looked like they were about to shit themselves.

Texas cuffed Adam’s hands not so gently behind his back, steering him with a firm hand to the van.

“Wait…” Adam announced, jerking his shoulder out of Texas’ hold and squatting down at the side of the car. The young kid blinked, looking out of his element at the situation and not understanding what was occurring. My men looked at me and I just shook my head letting whatever this was happen. He couldn’t run far from us now.

“Kai.”

“Daddy?” the boy replied.

A lump in my throat formed, not believing he had a son and that he’d cleverly hidden away even from his own family. But knowing it could be Milla’s kid too? That hit my chest like a ton of bricks.

“Remember the story I told you? The happily ever after.” He paused, the kid eagerly nodded with a full wattage smile. “We may have to change the ending, son.”

His voice cracked slightly, and I realised for the first time that however deranged Adam had been found to be, somehow, he felt deeply for his kid. There was emotion in his tone. I didn’t know what to do with that knowledge, it sat uncomfortably with me.Who was he? Was his head so messed up that he could become whoever he wanted, for different people?

The kid, Kai, scratched his head, clearly confused. “I don’t get it. Mommy, Daddy, and the prince get to live far away, together forever. That’s where we’re going.”What in the ever loving fuck?

“There’s been a change of plan, but you’re going on an adventure. You see that man there…” His eyes went to Preston and the boy nodded.Preston looked on with an unreadable expression. “He is the best at adventures, and fun games. Go on… give me a hug goodbye and go off to play. I’ll watch over you, always.”

Adam knew he was going to die at our hands. He was saying goodbye.

“What’s that?” Kai asked curiously, seeing Adam’s hands cuffed behind his back as he scrambled out from the car. He pushed his small body against his dad’s, before pulling back.

“Oh, we’re just playing cops and robbers. A really good game.” He smiled at his son, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “Go on, off you go,” he encouraged, allowing Texas to take him to the van.

We were essentially taking his kid away from him, and vice versa, but with good reason. Treating your own flesh and blood and loving them didn’t negate what he’d done to Milla, and many others.

Securing the other two adults, we all looked between each other, and Kai, who stood glancing around, unsure what to do. Just like us.

Drew threw his hands in the air and backed away. Ronnie smirked, following him and sliding into one of the vehicles.Very helpful.

“I’ll be in the car.” Thomas thumbed his hand over his shoulder, scurrying off towards it. Leaving me, Preston, and Texas to deal with this.Bunch of pussies.

“So… what do you say about that adventure?” Preston enquired, levelling down on his haunches to the kid and slapping a carefree expression on his face which I knew was for show. Preston held his hand out in invitation; Kai blinked then took it. He led him to my car, strapped him in the back mumbling about no child seats.Seriously?

“Right, Kai. Hollis here”—Preston pointed to me—“is taking you to a big castle where there’ll be people to play, especially hide and seek. It will take us a while to get there, are you okay with that?” Preston’s eyebrows furrowed as the kid nodded.
