Nora:

Don’t forget, venues today at 2!

K, final reminder, T-Minus 30 - don’t be late!!!

I swipe those away. Her pushiness clearly matches the woman she hired to plan her wedding. I wasn’t thrilled when Nora told me I needed to sign documents and that the planner needed to connect with me on the budget. That didn’t bother me really. I’m a businessman. I get it. But she wouldn’t stop following up. She wanted everything right now and I don’t have time for that shit.

I check the one from Charlie next.

Charles:

Hey man! I’m gonna be in your neck of the woods next month. We need to meet up.

I went to college with Charlie Jones and even though he lives in New York, he’s still one of my closest friends. Only friend, really. I don’t have time to deal with a large social circle. I type out a quick reply.

Me:

Send me your schedule and I’ll see if I can get you on my calendar.

He responds immediately.

Oh, how delightful of you to fit me in.

STFU

I’m so excited to see your grumpy ass face.

It’s been a while.

Too long, my friend.

Let me know when you’re here and I’ll make it work.

You make me smile, Theo.

I snort but don’t reply. I always make time to see Charlie when he’s in town or if I find myself in the Big Apple. Maybe he will finally take me up on my offer for a job and move here to Indy permanently.

“Mr. Abbot, please, you need to leave. It’s ten till,” Meredith scolds.

“I’m going,” I tell her and push up out of the chair. I pocket my phone and make my way out of my office. I open my mouth to ask where I’m going when she cuts me off.

“Scottish Rite.” She’s ahead of me, walking back to her desk that sits right outside my office. How she knew what I was about to ask beats me. But there is a reason she’s my assistant. She’s good at her job.

I make my way down several floors to the parking garage. Eli Co. has several locations worldwide, but its headquarters are here in Indianapolis, Indiana. We are just on the outskirts of downtown, so the drive a few blocks in could take me longer than expected.

Once in my Tesla, I drive to the Cathedral and once again wonder how I got roped into this. I was very clear about my involvement. If I were a betting man, my bet would be on the wedding planner. I probably pissed her off when I had Meredith reply to all her emails on my behalf.

Nearly twenty minutes later, I find parking and as I get out of my car, I marvel at the grandness of the ancient building.

“Why the fuck would Nora pick this place?” I say under my breath. This place never even crossed my mind as a venue. I take the steps up to the front door two by two, feeling a little shitty that I’m late. I walk in and ask the first person I see where the theater is, per Nora’s text from a few minutes ago, that’s where I can find them.

Despite being born and raised in Indy, I’ve never stepped foot inside this massive church. It’s grand and the architecture is stunning, but the place is also very antiquated.

I can hear voices as I enter the theater and am taken aback by the fact that this is quite literary a theater. A massive one at that. Glancing around the area, it must fit at least a thousand people.

Fuck, how big is this wedding going to be, Nora?

I bite my tongue from letting the words tumble out of my mouth. I nearly stop in my tracks as I make out the voice of a woman I’m not familiar with. Her voice is light but confident. The voice is full of passion and as I zero in on the words she’s saying, I find myself captivated.
