“It would be if he wasn’t such a big grump. No joke, Ruth, this man is infuriatingly grumpy. And he’s opinionated. It took him nearly two weeks to get all the contracts signed. He refused to meet with me over the budget or even talk on the phone. I had one very snippy email from him and the rest was done via his assistant.”

Ruth shakes her head, her hand covering her mouth. “My goodness, tell me more.”

So I do. I launch into his behavior while we were looking at venues. She gives me all the appropriate responses. Truthfully, I haven’t mentioned my frustration over him to anyone. Not even Layla. It’s been a week since our meeting and I’m thankful I don’t have to see him again anytime soon. Well, sorta. I wouldn’t mind seeing his face, as long as he doesn’t speak.

When I’m done venting, she nonchalantly says, “Oh, you know, that reminds me, I did know about the situation. You know how I like to look into all our clients.”

I snort. “You mean you're nosy?”

“It’s good practice, my dear.” She waves a hand. “Anyway, I looked them up. Neither your bride or groom was on Match Me, but I found a Mr. Theo Abbot.”

I suck in a breath.

“You didn’t mention how attractive this young man is.” She tsks.

“He’s in his thirties.” I lean away from my desk.

“He’s young. I’m seventy-five, Cassie, a fifty-year-old would be considered young.”

“Fair.” I drum my fingers on my desk, hating that I’m now thinking about Mr. Grump being all attractive and sexy.

“I don’t have my phone on me, but you could pull up his profile.” She urges.

“No, thank you.” I cross my arms, my fingers itching to move toward my cell.

The sparkle in Ruth’s eyes gleams. “Well, why not?”

“I’m not interested in him like that. He flat-out irritates me,” I tell her.

She cackles. “My darling, you never get irritated.”

“I do. I just don’t show it. But this man”—I let out a growl of frustration—“I wanted to punch that handsome face.”

Ruth can’t stop smiling and I appreciate that she is trying not to laugh.

“Well, I only brought up his profile because I found it interesting. You said he runs Eli Co. The profile is very detailed.” She shrugs.

I don’t remember mentioning where he works. But who knows. “Yeah, well, he probably has to pad his profile to cover up for his award-winning personality,” I grumble.

Ruth couldn’t smile any bigger if she tried.

“So you’re not interested in him.”

Appalled. “Absolutely not, Ruth. I’m offended.”

“No, you’re not, but continue on your tirade, darling,” she says smugly. So I do.

“And even if I was attracted to him, he’s grumpy, opinionated, thinks only his time matters, no one else's, and lastly, he’s a client.”

“Technically, he’s not,” she offers.

“He’s paying the bill.” I roll my eyes.

“Sure, but he’s not the one getting married. So he’s fair game.”

“I’m not interested in his game,” I mutter. “Really, Ruth. I’m not going there.”

“To be honest, Cassie, I looked through both of your profiles, and I think you two would match quite well. I would want to go through my own process, of course, the app isn’t my cup of tea, but I really think—”
