“Unfortunately, none of us can calm her down.”

“How close is she to being ready for photos? We are getting into crunch time, Rosie.”

I take one last look at my handiwork, making sure the entry tables are just perfect, then head off in the direction of my crying bride.

“Hair and makeup are done. Well, makeup is going to have to be retouched at this point. The dress was on. Now it’s not. All the rest of the party is good to go.”

I smile at one of the photographer assistants as I pass and make my way to the bridal suite.

“I’m on my way, but what’s wrong with the dress? I need to prepare myself.” I speak quietly as I make my way through the side hall.

“So you were right this morning when you first saw her. She was dealing with a major hangover. But when they went to get the dress on, she started crying that it wasn’t the right dress. That it’s not her dress, and it doesn’t fit right,” Rosie whispers.

Her voice is clear but low. Thankfully, gone are the days of headsets and the AirPods in my ears are a way better fit for times like these. Rosie must be in the room with the bride since she is being so hush-hush.

“Isit her dress?”

“Yes, Shelia says Melissa has gained a couple of pounds, so the dress is definitely a little snug.”

I roll my eyes. Hopefully, the lovely mother of the bride didn’t make things worse by telling the bride this to her face.

“My goodness.” I sigh as I get closer to the suite.

“Yeah. I think a good pep talk from you should help. However…” her voice trails off.

“What?”

“Oh no. No, no,” Rosie repeats.

“Rosie, what’s going on?” My heart rate spikes. For every five weddings we handle, we have one wedding that throws us hurdles. And I’m overdue for a wedding day hurdle.

Rosie doesn’t respond because I end the call just as I step foot into the bridal suite.

I take in the large room and find the bride standing in the middle of the room, a few of her bridesmaids gathered around her.

I scan the space for Shelia, and she’s whisper-yelling, quite loudly, at the two women sitting on one of the couches in the room.

“You know better than this, Martha. How could you?” I overhear.

I don’t know where to go first, but Rosie blocks my path, her hand, stopping me.

“What’s happening?” I ask my assistant. That’s when I notice she is biting back laughter. She reaches up and covers her mouth, dipping her head.

“For the love of all things, if you don’t tell me right now what’s happening…” I trail off as Rosie nods.

“I’m sorry. It’s just, this is going to be one of those weddings we remember.”

My eyes widen as I motion for her to get to the details.

“Martha and Beth have been sitting there on that couch commentating this whole time about how funny this whole dress issue is, not to mention how Melissa got wasted last night. They’ve been getting all kinds of nasty looks and reprimands from Mom. But while Shelia wasn’t looking, Martha gave Melissa a Valium.”

“Oh, shit,” I mutter as I walk past Rosie and head to the grandmas in trouble.

“I’m sorry, dear, but she was out of control. She couldn’t get her shit together. I stepped in.”

“You probably just ruined what is supposed to be the best day of her life, Martha.” Shelia seethes.

Martha just waves her off. Beth giggles next to her.
