Poor fucker.

He’s not taking it well.

“Is that him?” Alan’s tone is angry.

My head whips up as I place my phone face down on the cloth-covered table, muting the ding of a reply text. Heat rushes to my cheeks. I feel horrible that this is where we’ve ended up.

“I’m sorry, Alan,” is all I say. He doesn’t need to know who I’m talking to. I grab my phone and go to shove it into my purse when a second ding sounds into the table.

“So it is? The man who sent you a drink the other night? It was a bold move on his part, a dick move, trying to snake another man’s girl, but it was bold, I’ll give him that.”

“Alan, I’m not your girl. And I’m not interested in talking about anyone else or what happened the other night,” I say as calmly as possible.

He huffs, but his face turns desperate. “Cassie, please just give us another shot. I know we can find that zing.”

A sad smile covers my lips. “Alan. Please understand me here. I’ve known for a while that things were not going to progress between us. But I kept ignoring it, putting off this conversation. I can’t do that anymore. You deserve better than that.”

Alan slumps in his chair. Oh, thank the heavens it’s finally sunk in.

“Okay, Cassie. I hear you,” he says, defeated. I feel so bad, so I try to soften the blow a little.

“Alan, I have an idea.” I push my bowl away from me, my chicken Cobb salad no longer appetizing. His eyes perk up. “You know my business partner is a fantastic matchmaker, right?”

“Yeah. I remember,” he replies skeptically.

“I just know she could find your perfect match if you gave her a try. I would be happy to refer you to her and even make sure all fees are waived.” Layla will want to strangle me. She hasn’t matched a couple for free since her early college days, but she’ll do it.

“Really? You’d do that?” Alan asks.

“Of course, Alan. There’s no reason we can’t still wish each other well.” I smile at him. And throw out all the positive vibes I can into the universe for this man.

He shoves his hand into his short hair. “Oh, all right. Send me her contact info and when I’m ready, I’ll reach out.”

The date ends shortly after I send him the service request form from our site. It’s not until I’m in an Uber on my way home that I check my phone and read the two missed texts from Theo.

Theo:

You’re too kind.

Call me when you’re done breaking his heart

I grin down at my phone. Curious how our relationship just progressed to phone calls. Even though my breakup date was stressful in a way I hadn’t expected, my night is looking up.

Chapter 13

A DARK AND DANGEROUS VIBE

THEO

“Really,Teddy, your resting bitch face is on point today,” Nora says behind me.

Rolling my eyes, I instinctively tug at the cuff of the starchy shirt I’ve got on.

“I mean, I think you’d win an award for the grumpiest man in Indy if there was such an award.”

I huff out an amused grunt.

“But I’m glad there isn’t. I don’t want to be known as the woman who’s related to the grumpiest man in the city. I’d rather just pretend my big brother is happy and kind and smiles at people in his day-to-day life.”
