If she asked me today, what would I say?

I’m not sure.

Am I ready for that next step? Boyfriends ultimately lead to more and that’s a step I need to make clear I will never take.

But calling her mine, even for a short while, is fucking tempting.

“I’m going with the burnt orange ties,” Nora says as she walks back into the fitting area, holding said tie in her hands. “It’s my wedding. You can’t talk me out of it.”

Her chin juts out in defiance. My lip quirks.

“I won’t,” I tell her and I take the tie out of her hands and loop it around my neck.

“It was this or the peachy one. And I just wanted to go more bold,” she adds, watching me work the tie into the perfect knot. Tightening the knot, I drop my hands, waiting for her response to the final look. “Yup. The burnt orange it is.”

Nodding to her, I loosen the tie, hating the fact that I just tied it. She notices and reaches her hand out and makes a “give me” motion. Lifting it off my neck, I give it back to her.

She undoes the knot quickly, handing it off to the tailor so he can make his notes. From my understanding, he will create the profile of what Nora wants, and when Mateo and his groomsmen come in to be fitted next week, the decisions will be made.

I came in today because I’m going out of town next week, so I won’t be able to attend with Mateo and company. Coming in today with just Nora is preferred, anyway. I like Mateo, but some of his friends are twats.

“I think Cassie will be happy with the final look. What do you think?”

“I think this is your wedding and my opinion doesn't matter,” I mutter as I shrug off the dark navy suit jacket.

“It does. You have to wear the suit for several hours,” she replies as she plops down on a nearby chair.

“Nope. I’ll wear the ugliest penguin suit for you, Nor.” I work on the cuff of the light blue shirt.

“Aww, Teddy. You’re the sweetest.”

“Sure. That’s me,” I grumble.

“You look quite dapper in the suit, though. The blue really works to make you look slightly less surly but more of a dark and dangerous vibe. The pop of orange will bring the ladies’ wandering eyes right to that grumpy, yet handsome face,” she says thoughtfully.

Slowly blinking, I ask, “Who are you?”

“I think Cassie will probably melt.” She looks down, studying her nails. Her mention of Cassie has me glaring. I haven’t forgotten about my suspicions that Nora is trying to play matchmaker.

“What gives you that idea?” I unbutton the final couple of buttons on the shirt, pulling it off, leaving me in my standard white undershirt.

“I know you’ve got a thing for her.”

“Actually, I need to tell you something.” I decide that hiding the fact that Cassie and I are seeing each other from Nora would just make my life harder.

Nora’s face perks up, clearly bored with the task of watching me be fitted for a suit.

“Cassie and I are kinda seeing each other.” I grab my slacks off the nearby chair and step into the small changing space, yanking the thick fabric curtain closed behind me. Nora is the only female in the place, and if she wasn’t here, I would drop my pants and change where I stood. But I think the last time my little sister saw me in my underwear was when we were little kids.

“As in, you’re dating? Oh my gosh. This is the best news, Theo.” Her voice is laced with excitement and I can’t stop my eye roll. She’s too invested in my dating life.

“Uh, kind of,” I answer, tugging my pants up.

“What does that mean?”

“It means that we have dinner sometimes, but mostly, we do… other things.” I grunt as I fasten the pants and rip open the curtain.

Her face drops. “You mean, you’re just sleeping with her?”
