“I’m worried about you.” She swats a tear off her cheek.

“Don’t be. I’ll be Gucci,” I say and the joke lands. She chuffs out a laugh.

“Don’t ever say that again.”

“Stop crying or you’ll have puffy eyes tomorrow,” I tell her, reaching out to grab her hand in mine.

“Don’t be a jerk.” She squeezes my hand and wipes her face with her other. I grin.

Muttering, she says, “Of course it takes me crying to get you to smile.”

Mateo joins us. “I’m going to head out, Nora.” He looks down at my sister and there is nothing but love in his gaze for her. My heart twinges. I know that look. I looked at Cassie like that.

Nora nods and holds up a finger. Looking back at me, she leans in and gives me a hug.

“I love you, Teddy. And I know she does too, so if you wanted to maybe let yourself be loved and fall in love, fix it.”

Letting her go, she winks at me as she stands and turns to her husband-to-be and they walk away.

I watch them leave. In a blink, I catch a glimpse of Cassie’s blond hair as she embraces Nora. I blink and she’s gone.

She’s gone.

It’s just me now.

Fuck.

“I’m telling ya, man, the woman was fine with a capital F.” Charlie bites his lip as he tells me about the flight attendant on his way from NYC this morning.

“You sound like a douche,” I grumble, checking my watch. All most time.

“Whatever, man. I just have a new goal in life, joining the mile high club, baby.”

I roll my eyes. “What are you doing here?”

His eyes widen. “I was invited, asshole.”

“No shit. I mean right now, why are you here, in the hall, spouting off shit about fucking in an airplane?” I stuff my hands in my pockets.

“I’m here for you,” he says casually.

I glare at him.

“Just thought today may be a little rough, so I thought I’d hang with you until go time.” He claps my shoulder and the unease lightens.

“I appreciate it. But I’m fine,” I say to him.

He makes a noise as he looks over my shoulder. Glancing that way, I see Cassie coming our way. And shit, she looks amazing. Her hair is perfectly styled, her smile is wide, and the urge to kiss her stupid grows in my gut. She has yet to make eye contact with me, but her head is high and she exudes so much sexy, fucking power.

“Excuse me, I need to chat with the bride.” Her eyes finally dart to me. Our gazes lock, and that’s when I see the sadness. It feels like a punch in the gut. Did I cause that sadness, or has something happened? The woman is fucking sunshine and happiness, yet everything about her right now is screaming it’s all fake.

Charlie steps away. I don’t move from my spot in front of the door that leads to the room Nora is supposed to come out of any minute now. She brushes by me and the scent of her fills my lungs and I want so badly to reach out and touch her.

The door opens and she disappears behind it.

“Well, that was interesting.” Charlie laughs next to me.
