“I love you,” I say into his chest.

“So fucking much,” he replies into my hair.

ACTING KINDA SUS

CASSIE

“I don’t know,Lay, he’s acting kinda sus,” I tell my best friend as we wait near the luggage claim for Stella.

She’s just moved back into town, and Layla and I are her welcome wagon.

“How so?” Layla eyes me.

“This dinner party was his idea.” I bite my bottom lip.

“Does he cook?” she asks.

“He dabbles, and you know I don’t do big fancy meals, so the menu is so very middle class,” I mumble.

She shifts toward me, her jaw agape. “And that’s a problem, how?”

“Oh come on, Lay, you know he’s worth millions.” I twist my lips to the side. “You’re right, I should just have it catered.”

She shoots a hand up in front of her chest. “Hold up, I never suggested that. And not to sound insensitive, but who from Theo’s socioeconomic side will be in attendance at this dinner party?”

“Nora and Mateo.”

“The same Nora and Mateo who had a baked potato bar at their reception?” she deadpans. She’s not wrong. The two did not follow the normal food choices of a wedding that cost slightly more than eighty grand. “So who’s the other millionaire in attendance? Your brother? Please,” she draws out the word, “Cashanova makes box seat kind of promises just for a pan of your homemade mac and cheese. He doesn’t need fancy.”

I huff. “Fine. You’re right.”

She makes a little noise in her throat, clearly happy with my admission. I cross my arms in front of me.

The whole thing still makes me feel a little suspicious. My man is grumpy on his best day. He’s not into big social gatherings, so inviting fifteen people to the house for dinner just doesn’t sit well.

“Whatever, I’m excited. It will be a fun time for sure.” She claps her hands.

My eyes narrow. She’s suspicious.

“What do you know?” I point at her.

Her eyes widen. “What? I know nothing.” She shakes her head vehemently.

I glare at her. “I don’t believe you.”

She tosses both hands up in the air with a huff. “Well, that’s a ‘you problem’.”

I study my best friend. She sticks her tongue out at me.

I let a beat of silence pass between us before I turn the tables on her.

“I saw a face I didn’t ever think I would see again in the office the other day.” I watch her face for any sign of emotion. She peeks at her watch, acting like she didn’t hear me. “I had to do a double take when my eyes landed on Cole Reed from all those years ago at IU.”

She hmms in reply.

“I had to stop and chat with him. How crazy is it that he’s living in Indy now? And damn, did he get hot.” I wave my hand in front of my face to cool myself down.
