Suddenly, it pops into my mind.Ah. Chad Johnson. General Manager of the Finance Department. Congratulations, Chad, you’re fucked.

I quickly stand up, dismissing the meeting. I try to bite back my annoyance to give them a polite but firm goodbye, letting them know that their presentation has answered my questions. I’ll look over the rest of their reports later. Satisfied, they seem happy to be off the hook, anyway.

I can’t blame them. Does anyone like being on the spot in front of their boss? They collect their things and scurry off as I leave the conference room in search of Amber.

My phone vibrates again, and I see a response from Amber.

Sounds great, babe. I’ll be right up.

I’m so irritated by this obstacle, even if I can’t quite explain why. Other people have their wives stop in for lunch. Why is he being such a hard ass to her?

I love that she’s calling me babe and that she surprises me with lunch, but thanks to Chad, I can’t even enjoy it at this moment.I ponder this, which ends up only fueling my rage as I walk toward my office.

As I approach my office, I hear Amber’s voice down the hall.

“Look at the message! He told me to meet him at his office!” she exclaims. The sound of a male voice follows her statement.

“Ma’am, don’t make me call security. I have already told you once that you can’t be up here.”

My anger goes through the roof, practically causing my head to spin as I all but run around the corner. Amber stands in the hall with a man blocking her path to my office. I clear my throat loudly. The man turns to face me, undoubtedly to see who made the noise.

Your worst nightmare, Chad. That’s who,I think as my anger reaches its peak.

“Excuse me, Chad. I’ve got a question for you,” I say with hostility in my voice. I watch the color slowly drain out of his face with every word I say.

“Um. Yes, sir?” Chad says.

“Who the fuck do you think you are exactly not allowing my wife to come to have lunch with me?” I shout, my anger spilling out of my every pore. “I had to leave a meeting because she tells me you’re not allowing her to surprise me. In my own building!”

A crowd gathers now as Chad starts stuttering up a storm, trying to make excuses.

There isn’t an excuse in the world that can cover your ass on this one,I think, gritting my teeth.

“I’m sorry, sir. I guess I didn’t realize who she was...” he finally says.

Wrong answer.

I take a deep breath and slowly release it. My body shakes with the anger pooled up inside me.

“I’ll tell you what, Chad. Spring must have come early, so here is what I need from you. Go into your office, and clean everything out of your desk. Once you’ve done that, get out of my fucking building, you incompetent prick,” I bellow, causing Chad to flinch.

He doesn’t say a word as he scurries out of sight. I glance at Amber, whose face is shocked at the turn of events. I quickly walk over and kiss her.

“Are you ready to have some lunch, babe?” I ask her, politeness returning back into my voice.

She smiles and grabs my hand, interlocking her fingers with mine.

“Absolutely. I am starving,” she replies. I glance up to see half the floor now standing in the hallway, wearing equally shocked expressions. I raise my voice just once more to drive home the point.

“Let this be a lesson. Anyone who pretends now they don’t know who she is is out of luck. She’s my wife, so stop giving her a hard time,” I shout. “I hope I have made myself pretty fucking clear!”

Most of the onlookers now look scared, having never heard me raise my voice. This isn’t the way I normally handle things, but something about this entire incident has pushed me over the edge. Chad has never done this with anyone else’s wife. The fact that he felt the need to bully her and make her squirm just to be petty makes me livid.

Well, play stupid games, and win stupid prizes. The moral of the story is don’t fuck with the one thing that brings me happiness,I think to myself as I walk hand in hand with my wife to my office to enjoy our lunch.
