I will tolerate many things, but disrespect toward Amber is not something I'm willing to let slide.

My temper’s flaring dangerously as I respond. “I don't know who you think you are, but I would check your fucking tone with my wife if I were you,” I say to him, a threat lingering in my voice.

He regards me, a fire in his eyes that suggests he’s not going to back down.

“What are you going to do about it?” he taunts. “This doesn't concern you. So why don't you back off?”

Doesn't concern me? Last I checked, it concerned me the second you made my wife cry.

Before I can respond, Amber's Aunt Alicia pipes up. “So this is why you won't help us,” she says, pointing at me, “You think you're fancy now that you've married a bigshot? Don't have to help the common folk out anymore, huh?” she asks, seemingly pleased with herself.

Is this the best you can do, peasant? An angry smile forms on my lips at her calling herself a commoner. What is this, the 1500s? Who are they to talk about my wife like this?

“Here's an idea,” I say, after taking a brief pause in an attempt to collect myself. “Why don't you ignorant assholes get back in your car and get out of here before I make you?” There's anger in my voice and no hint of joking.

This isn't a request. My body's kicking into fight or flight. Unfortunately for them, it's choosing to fight.

Ted takes a step toward me menacingly. His head bobs as he does, increasing his similarity to a frog. I can't help but almost laugh.

Tough guy, huh? So this is how it's going to be. No problem.

I start to shed my suit jacket.I'll gladly put him in his place if he wants to rumble.

I'm ready to fight now, my body tensing and ready to pounce. My head is swimming in anger, fully preparing for what’ll happen next as my fists ball up at my sides.

You come here and pick on my wife. You deserve the ass-kicking you're about to receive.

“Kaden, please don't!” Amber’s voice suddenly says, cutting off my brain from figuring out how to beat the hell out of this guy. “They'll just call the cops, and then you'll be in trouble. Honey, please,” she says, practically begging me not to give her uncle what he deserves.

Damn it, babe. Why do you have to be logical?

I'm silent, fighting every instinct to pummel this guy for making her cry. Instead, I sigh and force my fist into my pocket, retrieving my cell phone. Within seconds, I'm on the phone with my lawyer.

“Mr. Williams, what can I do for you today?” he asks, straight to the point.

“I'm going to need a restraining order for my mother-in-law,” I say bluntly. “The respondents will be my wife's aunt Alicia and her uncle Ted,” I say.

I'm not on the phone much longer, just enough to give him the details. He's good enough to find exactly who they are. The little bit I know about Amelia, Amber’s mother, is all it takes for him to locate them.

“The paperwork will be submitted by the end of day, Mr. Williams. Is there anything else I can help you with today?” he asks.

This is why I pay him good money. He's fast and straight to the point. He's exactly what I need in an attorney.

“That'll do it for now, thank you,” I say, pulling my phone away from my ear as I stare Amber's uncle in the eye defiantly.

“Great, that's all taken care of,” I say, a false smile across my lips. “My attorney has filed a restraining order. You're no longer allowed within five hundred feet of this residence.” It’s a slight exaggeration, at least until the paperwork officially goes through. But let’s see if they know that.

The pair of them stare at me, dumbfounded. “That means, get the fuck off the property. If I find out you're here again, I'll have you thrown in jail so fucking fast your head spins,” I say, aggression returning to my voice.

They both look frightened as they stutter, trying to form a response. Ted is the first one to finally speak. “Of course, the rich asshole has a dirty lawyer on speed dial,” Ted sneers before he grabs Alicia's hand and heads down the stairs.

“If you mess with my wife, you're messing with me, too. Let's not forget that lesson in the future,” I respond sharply.I think they understand my point.

I glance at Amber, her perfect hazel eyes meeting mine. She immediately bursts into tears, almost falling to the ground. I rush forward and catch her, holding her tight against my body. Her head's on my chest, and I cradle it protectively.

Her whole body shakes with sobs as I hold her, recognizing the best thing she can do is cry it out. “Hey baby, it's okay,” I say softly, attempting to comfort her as I rub her back with my free hand. “I've got you, honey, and I'll always protect you,” I say honestly.

I can’t help but feel protective of the beautiful and kind woman sobbing in my arms.I’ll never let anyone hurt you again,I think to myself as I allow my cheek to rest against the top of her head.
