I fell asleep in his arms while he played with my hair like he’d done for so many years.

Except when I woke up, he was gone.

And all that was left…

Was to sign our divorce papers that afternoon.

Chapter Thirteen

—Christian—

Then

A week had gone by since Kinley’s birthday, and I’d barely seen or talked to her. This was our first big fight, and I didn’t know what to say or do to make it better.

I wasn’t going to back down on how I felt about Jax and his intentions with us. He didn’t want us together, that much I was sure of.

“You’re like a love-sick puppy, Christian. Where the fuck did your balls go?”

“Fuck you, man.”

Julian laughed. “Just apologize and go down on her. Works like a charm.”

“Right, because you would know.”

“You’re right, I wouldn’t, but if I was in the dog house, I’d use the only weapon I have. My skills to make her see God.”

“How do you see God?” Autumn walked into my bedroom. “I want to see God. Can you make me see God?”

“Autumn, the day you see God is the day I go to jail.”

She rolled her eyes at me. “I’m not going to be your little sister forever, Christian.”

“I hate to break it to you, but you’ll always be my little sister.”

She rolled her eyes again. “Julian, can you tell him that one day I’m going to have a boyfriend, and he’s going to love me something fierce?”

Julian narrowed his eyes at her. “I’m going to go with your brother on this one, kid. No little shit is going to make you see God on our watch.”

“What does God have to do with having a boyfriend? We’re not even religious.”

I laughed, I couldn’t help it. The shit that came out of her mouth was hilarious.

“Are you guys still fighting?” Autumn asked, sitting on my bed.

“Can you not tell? Look at your brother, he looks like my worst nightmare.”

Autumn narrowed her eyes at me. “I think you should go to her house, tell her how sorry you are, and then remind her of why she loves you.”

“You think it’s that simple?”

“Christian, love is easy. It’s you who’s making it hard.”

“Bro, you just got schooled by an eleven-year-old.”

“I’m almost twelve, Julian, if you haven’t noticed.”

“Twelve.” He smiled, appeasing her. “Such a big girl.”
