My heart skipped a beat.

It had sort of become his thing.

“What are you thinking?”

“How confused you make me.”

“You say that like it’s a bad thing?”

“Isn’t it?”

“Depends on who you’re asking.”

“I’m asking you.”

He didn’t falter in replying, “You confuse me too.”

“How?”

“You want to have this conversation here? Where Cade could show up at any moment?”

“We’re not doing anything wrong, right? You’re just my best friend’s brother. Nothing more. Nothing less. Weren’t those your exact words last month?”

“Someone’s feeling feisty.”

“I’m just repeating what you said. You kicked me out of your bed, remember?”

“Paige…”

“What?”

“You’re testing me, and I don’t appreciate it.”

“I appreciate it,” I snapped. “I’m not a toy, Adrian. You can’t play with me when it’s convenient for you and then throw me away when you’re done.”

“Oh, so that’s just for Cade then?”

“Cade doesn’t play with me.”

“I guess it depends on who you’re asking.”

“Again, I’m asking you.”

“What I think about you and Cade is irrelevant.”

“Why?”

“Because it’s not going to change the fact I need to stay away from you.”

“Says the man who bought me for ten thousand dollars. That doesn’t seem like you’re doing a good job at following your own rules.”

I never expected him to admit, “You’re right. I’m not.”

“Does that mean you’re here for more than just insisting that you’re protecting me from guys like you?”

He stepped toward me, getting close to my face before he countered, “What if I am?” Eyeing me up and down with a cocky expression, he added, “What are you going to do about it, Cherry?”

If I thought Adrian couldn’t surprise me any more than he already had in the last few months, he totally ripped the rug out from under me with this one.
