"Alessandro led me downstairs and through to the kitchen where there were two women diligently working on dinner.

“Bianca,” Alessandro called out to her in a friendly, familiar voice and the woman turned toward us with a smile.

“Ah, Alessandro.Signoresaid that you would be dining here tonight. Dinner is almost ready for you and the signora.

“Thank you, Bianca. I just wanted to let you know that we are going to have our dinner on the back patio this evening.”

“A good idea,signore. It’s a beautiful night.”

The other woman turned to greet us with a smile as well. “I’ll bring out the wine while Bianca finishes the antipasto.”

“Thank you, Lucia.

Alessandro placed his hand on the small of my back, a nice contrast from how he usually led me by the back of the neck and led me out onto the beautiful back terrace.

With one flip of a light switch on the side of the house, several dozen twinkle lights illuminated under the covered patio. We took our seats and Lucia was quickly behind us with a bottle of wine and two glasses which she quickly filled.

“Thank you, Lucia, is it?” I asked to make sure I’d heard Alessandro correctly.

“Sì, prego, signora.”

Just as she was leaving the table, Bianca came out with a tray of bruschetta.

Once we were alone, we dug in. Part way through our delicious meal, Alessandro leaned forward and studied me.

“Tell me something about yourself.”

“Like what?”

“Anything. What’s your favorite color?”

“Blue. What’s yours?”

“Would you believe me if I said it was blue as well?”

“I don’t see a reason you would lie about something like that.”

“That’s true. So, is there anyone else back home that you’d like to see when we go visit your father?”

“Not really.”

“No friends? Boyfriend?”

“Are you trying to gauge how much I’ll be missed if I suddenly disappeared to go work for the mafia?”

“I’m just curious about you.”

“Well, in any case, I don’t have many friends. I spend the majority of my time at work and the people I work with have families to keep them busy.”

“And no boyfriend?”

“I don’t really have time to date much.”

Dinner continued with mostly casual conversation. Alessandro was easy to talk to when he wasn’t holding a gun on me, and I found time flying by. Once Bianca and Lucia cleared our plates, Alessandro finished his wine in one gulp.

"Care to go for a walk?"

"Sure." I put my napkin on the table, and he helped pull my seat out for me.
