Matteo nodded and looked at Alessandro. “All set? The driver's waiting out front.”

“We're ready,” Alessandro answered, his hand slipping from the small of my back to my hip and giving it a light squeeze that made my breath hitch.

We climbed into the limo with the others who quickly broke out into small talk.

"Are you excited for tonight, Luca?" Mia asked happily.

"Yeah, can't wait." Luca's eyes sparkled with enthusiasm.

"Why are you so excited for tonight, Luca?" I asked curiously.

“Because he’s one of the men being honored tonight,” Alessandro answered.

“He is?”

He nodded. “Luca is being promoted to head enforcer tonight.”

“Enforcer?”

Alessandro nodded slowly.

“What does that even mean?”

“It means that he will be in charge of enforcing our don’s rules. Think of the mafia as a small country.” Alessandro turned toward me as he began to patiently explain the main infrastructure of the mafia. “We have our king or president, that’s the don.”

“Which would make the donna like the queen?” I asked.

“Sort of. In this case, Matteo and Mia are more equal.”

I was surprised to hear that but nodded before he continued. “The underboss is like the vice president…I’m not sure what the royal comparison would be, the consigliere is the don’s advisor, the head enforcer would be like the chief of police, in charge of the others who go out and help enforce the don’s laws, then we have soldiers who handle more of the day-to-day work.”

“Wow. I didn’t realize there was so much structure to it. It almost seems civilized.”

Alessandro raised an eyebrow again, the corner of his lip turning up slightly. “Almost."

“So, if Luca is being promoted to head enforcer, who is going to be the underboss and the consigliere?”

Teo’s brow lifted as he looked at Alessandro in surprise. “You mean you haven’t told her?”

“Haven’t told me what?” I asked, looking between the two men.

Alessandro cleared his throat. “Enzo will be the consigliere. You met him once. He owns the club where we had the party.

“Oh. And the underboss?”

“That would be me,” Alessandro said casually, and I gasped.

“You? Really?” Alessandro nodded and I continued. “That’s a pretty big deal.”

“It’s averybig deal,” Teo corrected me.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Before Alessandro answered, the car came to a stop and the driver climbed out first to open the door for us. Alessandro took my hand and tugged me toward the opened door. "We're here. Come on. Let’s go.”

He led me into an exquisite ballroom, decorated in elegant creams and golds to accent the rich wood floors and antique furniture. It was like being transformed to a different time, a time of royalty, kings, and queens.

I let out a small chuckle and Alessandro paused to look at me. “What is it?”
