Reaching for my phone, I made a call.

“Dude, I was sleeping.”

“Time to go to work, kid. Need your help.”

“You coming back?”

“No, so this is off the club’s radar. Personal. Get me?”

“Yeah, I get you,” he moaned, yawning. “What do you need?”

“Everything and anything you can find on Duchene International. The board members specifically. Go back twenty years. I want every fucking nasty detail from personal to company related.”

“What am I looking for?”

“The person who is trying to kill my woman. My gut is telling me it’s not a board member, but someone close to the family. I want to know who, why and how I can nail that son of a bitch to the wall.”

“You know Matrix is already looking into that, right?”

“And so are others, but so far, no one has found anything. I need this information fast and Sypher, you are the best.”

“Alright. Gonna need a day or two. I’m not a magician.”

“Understood.”

“You seriously not coming back?”

“No. My woman needs me here and if things go as I suspect, I will make this place my home. You know you are always welcome here, right?”

“I know. Just not going to be the same without you, ya know?”

“Watch your back, kid. The club is imploding.”

“I know. Got my eyes and ears everywhere. Saw and heard some shit I wish I hadn’t seen. Ghost is trying to contain it all, but he can’t. Satan’s Angels have returned and are causing trouble. Shadow left three days ago. No one knows where he took off to. Remi packed up the kids and left. Reaper’s been drinking since. The place is a fucking mess. My brothers have told me to stay away.”

“Think you should listen to them, kid. If shit’s as bad as you say, you take care of you. You need me, I’m close. I’ll come running.”

“Thanks man. I better get off here. I’ve got a midterm tomorrow.”

“Let me know when you find something and, Sypher, good luck on that test tomorrow.”

The kid chuckled. “Already got it aced, brother. Too easy.”

Smiling, I hung up the phone. Getting to my feet, I walked over to the large windows and threw back the curtains. The New York City skyline was lit up like Christmas. The city that never sleeps was alive and well tonight. This was a whole new ballgame I was walking into. Something I avoided my whole life. Now things were different. To win this fucked up game, I was going to have to become someone I never wanted to be. I knew how to play this game. Watched my father and grandfather play it often until it killed them.

It took a certain breed of man to make it in this godforsaken city, and only the strong survived. I planned on being one of those men. I didn’t have any other choice. This city was coming for my woman. To get to her, the city would have to go through me and that would never happen. I was going to need help. A specific kind of help that only a select group of men had. To get that help, I would have to do the unthinkable. I knew the rules.

I had two choices.

Submit my name to the board for consideration as an incoming prospect to the Soulless Sinners, but doing that would leave me out of the loop. I couldn’t stand by and allow others to fight my battles. No. The other option was to fulfill a specific task that the board demanded. In doing so, I would open myself bare to the board, giving them ammunition to eliminate me if I ever betrayed them. Basically, I would sign my life away in blood to the Soulless Sinners. That was what most people didn’t understand about the club. The brothers who sat on the board each completed a specific task, and only those on the board knew what that was. The Soulless Sinners wasn’t just some regular motorcycle club. They were a select group of men who did what nobody else would or could do, and I was about to become one of those very men.

Putting my phone to my ear, I listened as it rang until I heard the familiar growl and firmly said, “I’m in.”

“You sure? You can’t take this back, Vicious.”

“I’m in.”

“Will put your name before the board when we meet again.”
