“I’m doing good.” I didn’t have to see his face to know he’d rolled his eyes. “Seriously, I’m having fun and this is good. I’m not going to try to put pressure on any of us for it to be perfect, but I think this feels right.”

He nodded against me, kissing me again. “I’m glad… and I agree. I think this feels right too.”

I got a hug as Tabitha’s humming seemed to reach a crescendo, and as he stepped back, the door opened to a smiling Miss Tabitha with her clothes back in place. “Hands, Daddy.”

Chuckling, I nodded and walked in to help her. “Yes, time to get clean hands.”

As I moved behind her at the sink, she peeked over at Gaylen and giggled, then whispered to me. “Treat? Good girl.”

She got the reaction that she wanted when Gaylen gave a dramatic groan. Giggling as I washed her hands, she leaned her head back against me and whispered again. “Silly Poppy.”

Yep, even she knew that groaning was not a no.

Such a smart girl.

I brought my lips closer to her ear and actually whispered this time, instead of it coming out like we were on a stage. “I have M&Ms for a good girl.”

Her giggle was full of delight and shenanigans.

Gaylen was immediately suspicious and narrowed his eyes at us as he stepped closer to the bathroom doorway. “That sounds like you two are hatching a plan.”

Why yes, we were.

Tabitha giggled again but tried to shake her head and aim for innocent, even though it didn’t work. “Happy Poppy? Cuddles?”

Bribing him with cuddles to ignore the plan… I approved.

“Oh, Poppy would love to cuddle our sweet girl.” Kissing her cheek as I finished drying her hands, I stepped back as she wiggled.

Once free, she bounced over and threw herself at her Poppy, shaking her head. “Kitten.”

He chuckled, completely forgetting what he’d been so rightfully skeptical about only seconds before. “Yes, you’re Poppy’s kitten. Do you want cuddles while your Daddy makes a snack?”

She turned around, putting her finger up to her lips. “Shh.”

That wasn’t suspicious at all.

Gaylen shook his head but pretended not to notice as she aimed her smile back at him again and nodded. “Daddy snack. Poppy cuddle.”

Well, it seemed we had a plan, a happy little, and a smiling Poppy. As long as that stayed the same, I was going to count today as a success.

Chapter 9

Tabitha

Thinking about another snack made me realize I was big hungry, and being big hungry made me realize it was close to dinner, and realizing it was close to dinner made me think about what that meant.

Ender.

If I didn’t call or text him soon, he was going to pick me up.

That made me big.

Daddy seemed to realize it too because he set the pony he’d been playing with on the floor and straightened. “I think your stomach growling woke up your grown-up side. I’m going to have to remember that.”

Grinning because he was right, I nodded and sat up on the floor, crossing my legs in front of me since the dress was long enough not to flash him. “It’s terrible. I guess that just means you’re going to have to feed me more snacks next time I come over to play.”

It took me just a second to realize what I’d said but Gaylen’s snort from the kitchen had Daddy almost laughing and was the perfect distraction. Instead of using it to brush over the fact that I’d invited myself back, though, Daddy nodded. “Yes, lots of snacks and we’re going to need more toys.”
