“You’re welcome.” He shook his head, probably at the nosy lady, before leaning back in his chair. “I was surprised that you stayed the whole afternoon and evening with them. I was half expecting a panicked phone call from your Daddy because you’d done something else ridiculous.”

That probably wasn’t entirely unreasonable but I rolled my eyes. “Don’t be silly. He’d have made Poppy call and growl at you.”

Using their names hadn’t seemed like the best idea with the woman behind me hanging on every word. But I couldn’t claim to be the smart one about that. Ender had pointed it out when she’d first started scooting closer… and her huff said she hadn’t appreciated it.

Some people were so rude.

Ender snorted as he reached for his coffee. “Either way, I’m glad there wasn’t a problem at that point, but now would be a good time to confess if you already did something to confuse them.”

He was one of those rude people too.

“It’s been less than twelve hours since I got off the phone with them and I slept most of that time, so it’s physically impossible for me to have pissed anyone off.” Well, I was smart, so I probably could’ve figured it out but I hadn’t.

“Bullshit. You might’ve already sent them a text that they took out of context or said something last night or refused to answer their phone call this morning when they called to check up on you.” Ender smirked when I finally sighed, tattling on myself. “See, what did you do?”

“Nothing.” I could honestly say that. “They didn’t call but they did text me and everything went great. Not even fine. Daddy wanted to make sure I was still feeling good and Poppy wanted to make sure Daddy hadn’t made me worry.”

They were so ridiculous sometimes.

But as Ender opened his mouth, I knew what he was going to say and I cut him off. “I know. I know. I can’t let him always talk about Daddy, but he worries and he thinks it’s his responsibility to make everyone happy.”

It wasn’t, but he thought it was.

“Besides, from some of the things Daddy said before he even knew I was listening, he’s realized that too.” And now we got to the part I might’ve been supposed to lead with. “He… well, this morning Daddy suggested that Poppy and I go on a date sometime this week. Just the two of us. By ourselves. Without Daddy.”

Ender had atold you solook but he kept most of his snarky thoughts to himself. “And? What did you say to that suggestion?”

Before I could answer him, his eyes went wide and he leaned forward like he was ready to jump over the table. “You didn’t leave that text on read for hours, did you? What time did he ask you that? He’s got to be having a fucking heart attack, Trouble.”

He was insane.

“No, that wasn’t what I did that was stupid.” I struggled but I wasn’t a complete idiot. “I just told him yes and that it sounded like fun.”

As Ender deflated back to his normal self, I sighed. “He thinks I’m very excited for the date and don’t have any questions or worries. I have both. But now I lied about it and that’s not theget a spankingkind of lie. He’s going to bedisappointed in me.”

How had I gotten myself in this situation?

Shaking his head, Ender frowned at me. “First, don’t scare the fuck out of me. Second, stop telling men what you think they want to hear.”

“I did it by accident this time.” In my defense, I hadn’t even had any caffeine at all when Daddy had suggested it. “I was still tired when we were texting.”

Snorting, he glared at me. “You’re smarter than this.”

I wasn’t sure how to respond to that, so I just looked helpless and he sighed. “Fine. Just text him later that you thought of some questions and tell him that you want to make sure everything is very clear before you and your Poppy have a private date.”

Oh, that was good.

“I’ll probably think of several more before I get home, so that really isn’t a lie.” Beaming, I felt much better. “Do you think I should ask if Poppy can spank me on our date or if we should do that all together? I’m leaning toward that being a group project kind of thing.”

Ender had a very good answer, and I could see it in his face because I knew histhis is what you’re going to doexpression very well.

Unfortunately, the nosy lady behind us started choking on something.

Drama queen.

Now I was going to have to wait for his opinion until we figured out if someone was going to have to do the Heimlich maneuver on her.

Some people just had to be the center of attention.
