He smiled indulgently and started shrugging on his blazer.

“You’re such a diligent worker,” he crooned, tucking a piece of hair behind my ear. I put on a sweet smile as if I were basking in his praise, and he ate it up.

Henry’s phone rang, and that seemed to shake him out of whatever he was about to say next. I finally breathed again when he stepped away, not bothering to acknowledge me again before he left.

I stood, frozen in place, waiting for the sound of the front door. Once it clicked, I snapped out of it, shaking out my body and taking a few measured breaths to calm myself.

My skin was crawling, and that red-hot anger still simmered under the surface. He was showing me a bit too much attention, and I was terrified he’d escalate it too far.

“You know, I wonder if I should be worried about how good of an actress you are.”

I turned to find the other alpha in the security team, Sterling, approaching.

“I don’t know what you mean. I’m no actress,” I told him calmly, but the look in my eyes was pure fury. They couldn’t just question me here. They were security, yes, but I doubted they were the only protective measures Burke had.

“You know, I’ve been wondering about something…” Sterling said as he stepped forward, moving closer until he was in my personal space. Pure triumph filled his expression when he breathed me in, and I groaned once his scent slammed into me. It seemed I was four for four with the security team. Only cruel fate would give me mates while I was lying and manipulating my way to freedom.

Unlike his brothers and father, his scent wasn’t overly masculine despite being an alpha. It was a spiced cider, crisp and sweet, with an undertone of spice.

The way he glowered down at me now was anything but sweet.

“You let him touch you, knowing you have mates?”

“I have a job to do,” I bit out. “I didn’t ask for mates. And what exactly do you think I would accomplish by telling him I have mates?”

“Don’t let him touch you again.” It was a direct order, practically growled at me in an alpha command that he could shove right up his ass.

“Fuck off, Sterling. Last time I checked, isn’t ityourjob as an alpha to protect me from unwanted advances? Risk your career because I’m sure as fuck not risking mine. Oh, and by the way? I fucked your dad.” I leaned in and whispered the last line, letting it sink in before walking away.

“You don’t belong here.” It was an accusation more than a question.

“You’re wrong about that.” Giving nothing away, I went back to my desk and took a seat, turning my back to him.

Despite the argument, I didn’t think he’d try to hurt me, yet I didn’t relax until his heavy footfalls stomped away.

For the next hour, I lost myself in work, fuming but focused, until someone sat beside me. I didn’t bother to look up. I knew it was Weston from the scent surrounding me.

“Don’t mind Sterling. He’s always got his panties twisted around his balls. He’s just mad he was the last to know you were mates.”

I snorted at that. “He’s even madder because I told him I fucked your dad.”

Weston laughed. “I don’t give a fuck who you have sex with as long as you let me fuck you senselessly as well.”

I almost offered myself up then and there to work off this tension, but...

“Yes, because I’msucha catch.” I hadn’t meant for it to come out so self-deprecatingly, but my guilt and frustration got the best of me.

Weston moved, crouching down and swiveling my office chair so I faced him.

“Don’t doubt yourself, Bailey. We know you don’t belong here and that there’s something going on, but we aren’t going to pry. At least not yet. Do what you have to do. We’ll be here on your terms,” he said. “And if anyone makes you uncomfortable? I’ll cut their dick off and feed it to them.”

“That’s so sweet,” I muttered, making him laugh.

I wasn’t sure what to say to that. I couldn’t exactly fill him in on my secrets. It would gosowell.Oh, by the way, I’m here because I killed someone, this mysterious Syndicate knows, and now I’m their pawn.

My emotions were so raw right now that a flash of my ex’s truck filled my mind, taking me by surprise. I closed my eyes, unable to stop the onslaught of memories as they slammed into me.

I vaguely heard Weston’s voice but couldn’t get back to him. My chest was tight, and cold sweat erupted on my body. I saw myself that night, blood on my skin and clothes ragged and torn away.
