Page 45 of Breaking Bailey

The office was still quiet, which meant I’d spent most of my day knocking out paperwork and enjoying the peace and quiet.

A loud commotion outside put the guys on high-alert. Voices grew louder until the door was flung open, allowing the senator to walk in.

“There’s my girl,” he called out, opening his arms wide as if he wanted a hug. I stood up to greet him, but I didn’t leave the safety of my desk.

“I’m so glad you’re back, sir. Did you have a great time?” I asked excitedly, even clapping my hands for emphasis. Without a sign of disappointment, he dropped his arms and went to his own desk, flopping down and kicking his legs up on it.

“It was fantastic. We managed to get to two events before Carlisle, which meant the tides were in our favor. I had a few important meetings, and let’s just say they wentreallywell.” He paused and glanced around the room, taking in the new layout of the office. “You’ve been holding down the fort well. I’ve heard all good things. I think I’m going to like this new arrangement.”

“Unfortunately, I went into a heat while you were gone, but thanks to suppressors, I managed to get through it. I did a bit of work from home for a few days just to be more comfortable, but I have your full calendar here. I even found a few events that seem a bit off the wall, but I think your attendance would help reach some of the voters that have been out of touch until now.” His eyes flashed with disappointment for a second, and it only added to my suspicions.

I grabbed the information I’d collected off my desk and walked over to his, laying it out so he could read through it.

Instead of giving it a glance, he reached over and locked his fingers onto my wrist.

“I’m sorry that you had to take your suppressors, but I’m glad that nobody took advantage of you.”

What a strange thing for someone to say.

One of the guys growled, and the senator broke the awkward moment, smiling as if nothing had happened. Did he suspect our relationship, or was he admitting he was involved and fishing for a response?

God, I was tired of riddles.

“I’m an experienced omega, so I know how to handle myself. The moment I felt it coming, I hurried home,” I reassured him. My finger tapped the papers on his desk. “Let me know what you think. We’re at the finish line, sir!”

He shoved it to the side, not even bothering to look, and I had to bite back my frustration of being dismissed. It had taken days to compile that shit, and he couldn’t even be bothered to give it a moment of his attention.

“Actually, I have something else,” he said instead, standing up and walking over to his bookshelf. He made quick work of opening the safe and pulling out the same papers I’d snuck into before.

“This is a bill the state has been trying to pass for years. I’ve made some amendments to it, and I’ve talked to the right people. If we can market this right, we can actually pass it this time. It’s something that could change lives in this world.”

Did he think I was stupid or naive enough to not question this? I must have played my part well.

“That’s wonderful, sir,” I said, giving him my best indulgent smile. He handed it over to me.

“This is just a copy. I want you to look over it, Bailey. Use those skills of yours to help weave it into this campaign. We need to be careful and word it right so that the other side doesnotuse it against us. This is what the world needs.” He spoke with such a serious tone that I almost laughed in his face.

“I’ve actually got some scientific research to go along with this if you’d like to take a look,” he added, handing me another folder he’d grabbed from his desk. “This should keep you busy. I want you on top of this. Forget everything else you’ve been working on. This is it, Bailey. This is our end game.”

“Of course, sir. I’ll give it my full attention,” I promised, heading over to my desk and starting to read. Without having to worry about being seen, I was able to focus on the small details, scouring each page to pick up on anything I might have missed. I made notes as I went along, adding in potential ways we could spin the negatives into positives even though I had no intention of him getting the chance.

The senator was in and out while I worked, but I barely noticed. With the guys there to watch over me, I wasn’t worried about leaving myself vulnerable to his advances.

While I read, I couldn’t shake the feeling that he was using this to test the grounds of expanding the ring by engineering ways alphas could live their lives more openly without consequence. The alphas could rut omegas when the desire hit, claiming it was instinct. There would be no way to stop it once they spread this far and wide. Every single case would be used as evidence to back up these fake scientific claims. On top of that, they were absolving themselves of reparations to the victim or any children produced by the attacks. It was another failsafe to legally protect them should anything come into light.

Did he think that no one would notice? There were people that would study these so they could translate the details for the common man. The only ones who would probably agree with this were alphas like him.

If I had needed a sign to finally let the guys in on the full scope of what I was dealing with, this was it, but I wasn’t going to do that without a failsafe. If I told them, they told me, end of discussion.

A knock on the door had me looking up. Veronica’s sneering face was staring back at me.

“It’s coffee break time. Do you want us to get you something? The senator insisted that we ask you since you’ve been through a lot after all,” she mocked.

“Veronica, I would never trust you to bring me a drink, but I’m glad to know it’s coffee time. Come on, guys. Let’s get our own coffee.”

She gasped with indignation and hurried off, her heels clicking on the tile. We were right on her heels, so she didn’t have a chance to say a word to anyone. She snatched the arm of another girl from the office, and they hurried out the door together.

Their precious senator didn’t even notice their departure, but of course his eyes zoomed in on me when we tried to sneak past.
