“See you then,” I said, giving him a small wave.

“He isn’t kidding about being a firecracker. She’s an omega that thinks she’s an alpha,” he said, laughing lightly at her expense. “You know, Bailey, something we haven’t talked about is what comes after the election.”

He grabbed two fresh glasses of champagne off a passing tray and handed me one.

“After?” I asked, already guessing where this was going.

“Yes. I’m not sure which you’d want, but I have plenty of positions I could offer you. I’d love to keep you on my team, Bailey. You’ve been a godsend,” he said in a serious tone. Honestly, I was a bit shocked. I’d suspected he was going to throw me in this ring of his, not offer me a whole new job.

“That’s an incredible offer, sir,” I said with as much enthusiasm as I could fake. “I’m humbled you think so highly of me.”

“With the new changes to Alpha and Omega Services, we’ll need the best of the best to make the transition seamless.”

“I can’t wait to help make it a reality,” I promised, knowing damn well that I’d do everything in my power to crush those dreams before they were realized. My mission might not be enough to make an impact, but it could stop further damage from happening.

Tonight was long and boring, but at least one thing did come from it. I now had a direct invitation into the senator’s house, which was exactly what we needed to get access to his computers.

If luck was on our side, this would be the final weapon to crush this campaign before the election.

ChapterTwenty-Six

Hayes

“What are the chances his wife kills me before the night is over?” Bailey let out a small nervous laugh. The woman did hate her, but for good reason. The senator constantly made a mockery of their marriage, and Bailey was just the new prize to be won.

“All I’m going to say is, have you played Clue?” The senator had invited Bailey, and she thought it best if only one of us came since this was a low-key dinner party at his house, not a huge event.

“Thanks, Hayes, super reassuring,” she deadpanned, giving me a side eye. She was much more relaxed than I’d expected.

Until her phone pined.

“The Syndicate?”

“Yeah,” she breathed out as she opened the message. “Fuck. They know where we’re heading. How the fuck do they know?”

“I’m not sure,” I said as I pulled over, taking the phone from her hand.

Syndicate:Enjoy your evening with Burke. Remember the word ‘Sadie.’ It will come in handy.

“That’s it?” I huffed out a laugh. She nodded as she took it back, not finding humor in the moment.

“Everything from them is cryptic and vague. I’m just left guessing,” she grumbled. The mood went from calm to sour, and I hated that, especially once we pulled up to the security booth for the gated community.

“Identification?” the guard asked as he stepped up to the car.

“I’m Hayes Shaw, here for Henry Burke,” I explained, giving him Bailey’s name for good measure.

“You’re on the list,” he confirmed. “Follow the road until it ends. Last house on the left by the lake.”

“Thanks.” I rolled up the window and pulled away.

“The horror references just keep coming, don’t they?” Bailey muttered, noticing the directions he’d given us were more than a little ominous.

She shifted in her seat, smoothing out her dress and checking her makeup.

“Stop. You look gorgeous. Don’t let the Syndicate throw you off. That word is likely a password. Put on your usual charm, and we’ll be fine,” I promised.

The house was even more extravagant than I’d anticipated. It was a modern mansion that had more windows than necessary. Everything was dark brick with black accents. Even the landscaping was pristine, the grass cut with lines and all.
