Page 105 of His Last Nerve

He stepped closer to her, his nostrils flaring under the brim of his hat. His lips were moving, but I couldn’t hear what he was saying. She pointed a finger in his face, yapping at him like a dog. Anger ignited inside me, and I found myself grinding my teeth.

Did she just put her finger in his face?

My feet were moving again, and once I got close, I heard, “If you don’t do this, I’ll go to the police.”

Denver huffed a harsh laugh. It was menacing and sent a chill down my back. “You are the biggest whore in the county, Cathy. You’ve sucked off half the police department and tried to fuck the other half. When Sheriff Bowan caught a whiff of your rancid cunt, he chased you off. So, you tell me,sweetheart, who in the hell is gonna believe that pile of bullshit?”

In a flash, she shot her palm out, ready to slap him. He caught her wrist with a snarl. Slowly, he turned his head to look at her hand and then turned it again to look at her face. “You’re done, Cathy.”

All at once, her façade dropped, and her body sagged. “No, Denver, please. Denver—”

“Get the fuck off my property. I’ll see you in court,” he barked.

“Denver—”

“OFF OF MY FUCKING PROPERTY!” he screamed in her face, causing me to jump. His voice echoed all around us, lingering in the air.

She ran. The woman ran away from him, trembling in fear. I watched as her car sped down the drive. A hand gripped my jaw, and my head was twisted. Angry gray eyes met mine and his presence overwhelmed me.

“She say what she was here for?” he clipped.

“She was calling for Caleb.”

He turned his head, his eyes on the pasture. “Denver?”

“Moonie got to her.”

What?

What did he just say?

“What?”

“Moonie couldn’t get you to convince me, so he found Cathy,” he hissed. He was still holding my jaw in his big hand. I wrapped a hand around his wrist, just in case he was about to go to the place he went yesterday.

“Hon—”

His lips were on mine in the next second and his arms were around me, caging me to him. By the time he pulled away, I was breathless and clinging to him. “Tim Moonie is playing dirty, City Girl,” he growled.

City Girl.

He hadn’t called me that in what seemed like forever. My stomach twisted. “Denver, what do you mean?”

“He’s using Cathy to get to me. The only thing that bitch can use against me is—”

“—Caleb,” I gasped. My fingers wrapped around the back of his neck. “Denver, what did she say?”

A shadow fell over his features as he said, “She is going to accuse me of rape.”

My brow furrowed and I felt my spine straighten again. “That fucking bitch,” I snapped.

His eyebrows lifted in surprise. “You aren’t going to ask—”

“You saved me from being assaulted, Smoke. You aren’t that kind of man,” I said, my voice getting softer with each word. He stared at me for a beat.

“My momma would’ve loved you,” he said, his voice gentle now.

My heart leaped. My stomach sank.
