Page 107 of His Last Nerve

He was playing with fire, and I feared we were the ones about to get burned.

Valerie also told me Moonie doesn’t skimp when it comes to obtaining land. He will pay what he promised, and he does itquickly. She told me that the sooner the owners were off the land the better. Currently, there was one pipeline being worked on in Texas. There was another project that starting in September in Nevada, one that he wants to run under my land.

I crossed the apartment and pushed open Cathy’s bedroom door. To my surprise, there was a man in the bed. Passed out. My hand went to my gun as I walked up to the low set bed. The man was alive—thank fuck for that. His arm was hanging off the side and he was buck ass naked. I looked to the ceiling, pinching the bridge of my nose.

I should pray for patience, but I’m not patient enough for that shit.

“Yo!” I kicked the mattress. The fucker didn’t wake up. Biting off a curse, I scanned the bed and tables beside it. My eyes landed on a bottle of melatonin—an empty bottle of melatonin. I took a picture of that, too, before sending it over to Diana.

She responded immediately.Got it.

Forgetting about the fucker in her bed, I made my way through her room, looking for anything—something. My eyes caught a blue folder sticking out underneath a pile of laundry on her desk.

Don’t even know why she has a fucking desk. The bitch doesn’t do shit.

I yanked the folder out and scanned the contents. My spine stiffened as my brain soaked in the words. My father’s words echoed in my head, the promise that Mason and I made him ringing in my ears. There was a pain in my chest, sharp and precise. That fucking bitch.

That.

Fucking.

Bitch.

This was a contract.Without looking back, I grabbed Caleb’s stuff and left the apartment.

On the way back to the ranch, I made a phone call.

Twomoredayspassed.

Valerie and I were on the couch, watching a movie with Caleb when it happened. There was a knock on the door. I heard the car driving up, but I didn’t want to disturb my boy, who was currently resting his head on my thigh.

The last two days had been a dream, aside from the Moonie bullshit.

My enchantress was in my bed and even though we hadn’t done anything since she came apart on my jeans, she was still in my arms at night. I was trying to keep my distance from her—sexually. I didn’t want to move too fast, because I was already spinning out of control when it came to her. I needed to show some restraint, and right now, I couldn’t be more thankful for my cockblock of a son. Sex would push me over the edge of insanity. I never knew it could be like this. When I was younger, I’d hoped. I hoped that someday there would be a woman as beautiful, kind, and fierce as Valerie in my bed.

That hope died years ago.

This woman, who currently had her had on my chest, her fingers curled into my t-shirt as Frodo ran through the woods on the screen, had reinstalled that hope inside of me. She told me she would give me a week. We both knew that was bullshit. She was going to give me more than that.

She was going to give me her life and that scared the shit out of me.

*knock, knock*

“Who’s that, Dad?” Caleb asked, sounding sleepy.

I ruffled his dark hair. “Your old man has to do some work, okay? It’s getting late; why don’t you get ready for bed?”

He sat up, rubbing his eye with his fist. “Okay,” he grumbled. Valerie stood and opened her arms.

My heart damn near stopped at the sight. She was dressed in jeans and one of my old t-shirts—it looked damn good on her. She could go out tomorrow, buy the most expensive dress on the rack and it still wouldn’t compare to my shirt on her body.

“Goodnight, sweetheart,” she whispered, pulling him in for a hug. Her hand was on the back of his head, her thumb swiping back and forth over his hair. I watched as my son tightened his arms around her waist.

“Goodnight, Val.”

There was a lump forming in my throat, and my skin felt tight.

My boy ran upstairs, and my woman stared up after him. After a moment, she cleared her throat and said, “Okay, I’ll give you two a minute.” She turned away and, in a flash, my hand was around her wrist, guiding her back to face me.
